Dear Kindergartener and Families,
Welcome to Kindergarten at Northwood Elementary! I’m so happy your child is in my classroom this year. I really hope you and your child are excited about the school year. You will be sending your “baby” to Kindergarten, can you believe how fast time has gone by! It is normal to be nervous, for both you and your child. I thank you for entrusting me with your most precious gift. More importantly you have a very important job too, your job is to be the parent of a kindergartener, and it will be an exhausting, exciting, and amazing year. Not only will your child learn be learning and growing, but so will you! You are giving the gift of independence. Keep in mind that kindergarten is about growing that independence. This is the year where your child will be responsible for not only taking care of learning but also taking care of him or herself. They will be reminded that it is their job to be a kindergartener and with that, will be expected to clean up, order lunch, follow rules, and routines, unpack, pack up and do their homework. I will be sending more information home within the next couple of weeks. I am looking forward to an amazing year. If you have any questions please feel free to call 4770 or at

What’s New in Kindergarten?
Your child will need to have sneakers or athletic shoes to wear everyday. If your child does not know how to tie shoes, it would be very helpful if you begin to practice. Please write your child’s first and last name on shoes, jackets, backpacks, etc…… Please dress your son/daughter in “play clothes”. We will get dirty! We will go outside weather permitting, and we will be gluing, painting, etc….. Snack Time We will be having a small snack daily. I will provide the snack for the 1st week beginning September 8th the class will bring in snack. Each child will have one day a month to supply snack for the class. A calendar will be coming home the first week of school with snack info and if we have any food allergies. It starts alphabetically so if your last name begins with ABCD…. you will be within the first week. What’s New in Kindergarten? Kindergarten has changed greatly in the past years. New York States standards for leaving kindergarten are high….. Reading at least 100 sight words, writing stories, counting beyond 150, adding and subtracting. It is a very challenging and exciting curriculum. I know you will be fascinated when your child learns all of these things, it happens fast! I am asking if you can help your child review things that we learned at school on a daily basis. Have fun while doing this, read books, play word games, review letter/sounds while driving, number counting, etc…. I will be sending some ideas for you through out the year. We will have homework, it is your child’s homework (you will need to help but) let your child do the majority of it. Again feel free to call or if you have any questions or concerns. Together we will make your child’s kindergarten year the best ever! Sincerely, Mrs. Angela Lam
