Career Academies make the connection to college and a career. Students can choose a pathway early, getting a great education and developing a skill. Students can earn industry certifications while in high school which makes them more valuable in the workforce. Career Academies make learning fun and relevant to a student’s future. The global economy of today requires students that have new academic talents and workplace skills. Career Academies provide meaningful education reform through cohort scheduling, academic and technical integration, and connections with business and industry. Career Academies effectively connect students to college and careers and improve their achievements in the classroom.

6 Culinary Arts Course Description
The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences and opportunities to assist planning menus, food preparation, and catering of school and local community events. In addition, students are exposed to all the different careers in the foodservice industry. Any student successfully completing the program can take the National ProStart Certificate of Achievement Examination.

9 Forestry Course Description
Forestry I is designed to introduce students to the forestry industry in Mississippi. This class provides instruction on forest careers and leadership thru FFA (student organization), forest safety, tree growth and development, dendrology, surveying and mapping, tree and log measurements and modern forest management. Forestry II provides instruction on forest management, timber cruising, marketing and harvesting methods, reforestation, fire management, and forest pests. Two (2) science credits are awarded upon successful completion of this program. FFA student organization

12 Horticulture Course Description
This course prepares students for entry-level employment or continuing education in a wide variety of fields in the horticulture industry. Course activities include laboratory experiences at school, and work-based learning in the field such as field trips. Topics covered include plant structure and growth, plant propagation, pest management, floristry, greenhouse crops and management, aeroculture, landscaping, design & installation, and turf grass management. Two (2) science credits are awarded upon successful completion of this program. FFA student organization

15 Business Course Description
Business Fundamentals is an introduction to business, and marketing fundamentals, communication. Major topics of study are business management, business law, and personal finance. Upon successful completion, students will receive .5 credit in Economics. Management focuses on the development of an extensive business plan that includes areas of business, communication, procedures and operations, security, and computer applications needed in order to operate a successful business. Students will develop skills toward meeting requirements for Microsoft Office Specialist Certification.
