Yamato family Emperor Yamato emperors still rule today

3 Heian Period Japanese emperor moved his court from Nara to Heiam (modern Kyoto) Art and writing flourished

4 Feudalism 1100: Emperor loses power Clans established armies
Land given to warlords in turn for protection Warlords (lords) surrounded themselves with warriors called samurai

5 Shoguns 1192 Minamoto clan emerges = shogun
“Supreme general of the lord’s army” Emperor still remained, but the shogun held the power

6 Turmoil and warfare 1600- Tokugawa clan restored order to the chaos, became shogun, and moved his capital to Edo Edo would come to be known as Tokyo – Japan restored period of stability Persecuted Christians (Catholics) 1639 – closed port
