1 Cognitive – Key Question

2 How can knowledge of the working memory be used to help those with dyslexia?

3 Reminder! Provide your key question at the begin of every answer.
The examiner does not know what your key question is. Lesson 1 Research and notes on: A01 – Describing the issue from your key QS A02 - Applying theories/research to discuss your key question A03 - Evaluating/assessing your key question using research

4 Dyslexia Is not the same for everyone
People with dyslexia often have strengths in reasoning, in visual and creative fields; dyslexia is not related to general intelligence; and is not the result of visual difficulties.

5 A01 – Describing your key question
10-15 mins NOTE form Bullet points 1. Research: STATS and general information on dyslexia Textbook (learning space) pages 126 and 127 2. Link to working memory 3. Link to short term memory 4. Advice given to teachers and parents to aid learning based on knowledge of memory? Why it is important for psychologists to study potential interventions to improve the educational attainment of those with dyslexia Try to ensure the last three bullet points are explained in layman's terms rather than using complex psychological knowledge

6 N-back computerised training (as explained in the Holmes article)
Down load the app – it is now on the list of ‘allowed apps’ to download N-back Have a go! 5 mins Can you answer these questions…. How does N-back work? How does this programme claim to help those who may have dome difficulty with their working memory?

7 Applying theories/research to discuss your key question (A02)
Classroom interventions (reduce memory load) – What are they and how do they work in regards to WMM and/or STM. Can they help? Computer interventions e.g. N-back. how do they work in regards to WMM and/or STM. Can they help?

8 Explain your key question (AO2) 6 marks
WMM - Apply theory to help explain dyslexia Short term memory (STM) knowledge from multi – store model What can be done to support those with Dyslexia based on the WMM and STM?

9 Evaluating/assessing your key question using research (A03)
5 mins pair work Using your notes from the Holmes article plan this essay (12 marks) 4 paragraphs What is the argument here?

10 H/W Give two ways in which knowledge of the working memory has helped to inform the treatment of dyslexia (4 marks) Describe your Key question (8 marks)

11 Lesson 2 – A02 and A03 write up (Assessment 6)

12 Exam technique – how would you answer this question?
Aaron has difficulty in school. He is disruptive and does not seem able to pay attention to what he is meant to be doing in class. He fins it difficult to write cohesively, tending to miss letters out of words and miss words from sentences. He finds reading equally problematic and finds it hard to follow his place in a passage of reading, as well as to sound out separate letters. His teachers think he is dyslexic and wonder what they can do to help him. Using concepts, theories and studies from the cognitive approach and understanding of working memory, discuss how Aaron might be helped (8 marks).
