3 ‘Big School’ We appreciate that moving from Year 2 to Year 3 is a big jump, for both the children and their families. Expectations are higher and this can be daunting for the children. We would like you to feel totally comfortable coming to see us about anything that concerns you throughout the year. You should have received our addresses and can contact us through these, but just in case you haven’t: Huge jump with lots of changes Please come and see us is a great way to send messages and I will endeavour to reply as quickly as possible.

4 Key differences between Y2 and Y3
Year 2 Year 3 Adults change the children’s reading books. Children change their own reading books. Children have fruit and milk time in class. No fruit and milk in the morning. We encourage children to bring in a healthy snack (fruit, vegetables or salad) for morning break and another that they can have in the afternoon. Wednesday is treat day and the children can bring in one treat as a snack (no sweets please) P.E. in the morning, children came in P.E clothes. P.E. on Thursday afternoon, children arrive in uniform and change after lunch. They will be sent home in their PE kit. Home time: children stay in school until teachers see their parents/carers. Home time: children find their parents/carers in playground independently. Children regularly read individually with an adult. Children will be listened to reading by an adult over the course of two weeks. Children will change their own reading books but we will ask that they have read the text with an adult more than once and discussed before changing. We will aim to read with them at least once every two weeks due to the level of support staff available. No fruit and milk Healthy snacks in afternoon Encouraging children to become mor independent and come back to us if their parent/career is not here.

5 How you can help Home Time Routines
We encourage much greater independence in Year 3 and the children come in and out of school by themselves under our supervision. Homework Homework will be set weekly and will alternate between English and maths. Once a half term the children will be given a Learning Log homework which they will have a longer period of time to complete. Reading Read regularly as possible with your child to continue to develop their phonic awareness, fluency, pace and understanding of the text. Multiplication Tables and Number Facts Practise, practise, practise! There are some great apps available now to support this, too. Check your document for more information on this Helpful grammar terms Reading 3x per week Sometimes other books Reading to your child is a great way to help develop their vocabulary and allows them to come into contact with a richer vocab above their level of reading Timestables – must know all by end of year 4

6 O Planners New for years 3 and 4 this year.
Have replaced the Reading Record from previous years. Please record all reading at with your child on the left hand side each week. Children need to have their planner in school everyday. At the end of each week, please sign at the bottom of the page before sending it back to school on Monday. Tuesday is the day that we will check them
