2. Irony: A Definition
The word IRONY comes from the Greek eiron meaning “dissembler in speech.”
In modern English, the term usually refers to speech incidents in which the intended meaning of the words is contrary to their literal interpretation.

3. DRAMATIC IRONY occurs when the audience, or one of the characters, knows something that the other characters do not.
Example: Horror films are notorious for presenting dramatic irony. The audience always knows where the bad guy is hiding when the “frantic” girl does not.

4. VERBAL IRONY is an attitude or expression that is opposite of what is said.
Example: Son’s report card is so bad, that his father is stating that they only ‘A’ he’d receive would be in courage.

5. SITUATIONAL IRONY when a situation or event ends the opposite of what is expected.
Example: This spray is suppose to prevent things from rusting, yet it’s rusted.
