2 The Battle of the Atlantic
A. Sinking of US ships 1) During the first 7 months of 1942 the Germans sank 681 Allied ships in the Atlantic ocean. 2) Allies responded by forming convoys or groups of mutual protection. - The Allies used radar to find and destroy U-boats. The Allies began to destroy U-boats faster then the Germans can produce them. - Allowed for a free flow of trade and control of the Atlantic Ocean. * Battlefield II: The war against U-boats

3 Battle for North Africa
A. Opening of a Second Front 1) Operation Torch - An invasion of Axis-controlled North Africa 2) Allied troops under Dwight D. Eisenhower force the Afrika corps under General Erwin Rommel (Desert Fox) to surrender. - From this location the Allies can launch an attack on Italy and open a second front in Europe.

4 The Battle for Stalingrad
A. A Turning Point 1) Germany’s attack into the Soviet Union made it to Stalingrad (now Volgograd) This was the last real obstacle standing in the way of German victory in the East. 2) The Germans conquered much of the city but the Soviet’s held on. In November the Soviet’s launched a massive counterattack. 3) On February 3, ,000 Germans surrendered. They were half- frozen, starved and lice ridden.

5 Stats of Stalingrad 1) In defending Stalingrad the Soviets lost 1,250,000 soldiers and civilians. 2) The Soviet’s suffered more casualties in this one battle then the Americans did in the entire war. 3) From this point on the Soviet’s began to push the Germans back to the West.
