1 “[JESUS] WAS THE GREAT JEHOVAH OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, THE MESSIAH OF THE NEW.”

2 What does ‘Messiah’ mean?
The origin of anointing was from a practice of shepherds. Lice and other insects would often get into the wool of sheep, and when they got near the sheep's head, they could burrow into the sheep's ears and kill the sheep. Ancient shepherds poured oil on the sheep's head. This made the wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheep's ears because the insects would slide off. From this, anointing became symbolic of blessing, protection, and empowerment.

3 Herod (Herod Antipus, the son of Herod that killed all the male babies when Jesus was born) had been rebuked by John for committing adultery with his brother’s wife (Herodius). John was in prison in Macherus, the hottest dryest part of the provience.

Explain Matthew 11:6 Blessed is the one who doesn’t interpret silence as hate. Blessed is the one who doesn’t confuse ‘unanswered’ as ‘uninterested’. Machaerus

7 Jesus’ response: Matthew 14:14
John’s death: Matthew 14:1-9 Jesus’ response: Matthew 14:14 How can showing compassion for others help us when we are suffering?

8 Matthew 14:19 - What was the first thing Jesus did before feeding the 5000?
C.S. Lewis: “I have noticed how the most balanced minds rejoice most, while the cranks, misfits and malcontents rejoice least… Rejoicing almost seems to be an inner health. Joy is incomplete till it is expressed.” (He praised God even though it wasn’t enough.  He gave thanks over his problem: “I have a problem… 5000 people … 5 loaves and 2 fishes… and all I want to do is praise your name right now…Thanks for providing.  Thank you for being YOU.  Thank you for knowing where a solution will come…”) When we don’t have enough…“Thank you for the opportunity to see your hand in my life…”

10 “We spend so much time and energy comparing ourselves to others—usually comparing our weaknesses to their strengths. This drives us to create expectations for ourselves that are impossible to meet. As a result, we never celebrate our good efforts because they seem to be less than what someone else does... “Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It’s wonderful that you have strengths. And it is part of your mortal experience that you do have weaknesses. “God wants to help us to eventually turn all of our weaknesses into strengths, but He knows that this is a long-term goal. He wants us to become perfect, and if we stay on the path of discipleship, one day we will. It’s OK that you’re not quite there yet. Keep working on it, but stop punishing yourself (President Uchtdorf, October 2011)

11 You see the 5 loaves and 2 fishes…God sees the 12 baskets of leftovers!

12 (LOOK FOR DETAILS – APPLICATION IS FOUND THERE)
Matthew 14:22-33 (LOOK FOR DETAILS – APPLICATION IS FOUND THERE) At what time did Jesus come to the disciples? How was Christ able to see the disciples at that time of day? What does Matthew say about why Peter sank? At what point did Jesus go help Peter? What principles have you learned from this story? What detail did Mark leave out in Mark 6:45-52?

13 "Only when with wavering faith he removed his glance from the Master to look at the furious waves and the black gulf beneath him, only then did he begin to sink. "It is my firm belief that if as individual people, as families, communities, and nations, we could, like Peter, fix our eyes on Jesus, we too might walk triumphantly over the swelling waves of disbelief and remain unterrified amid the rising winds of doubt. But if we turn away our eyes from him in whom we must believe, as it is so easy to do and the world is so much tempted to do, if we look to the power and fury of those terrible and destructive elements around us rather than to him who can help and save us, then we shall inevitably sink in a sea of conflict and sorrow and despair." (Howard W. Hunter, Nov. 1992)

14 What percentage of Israelites were bitten?
Where do you look when you are getting bitten by poison? (Everyone who looked around died. Those that looked up, lived)

Did he hear me? Should I repeat my question? Is he paying attention to me? Am I not good enough for him? Am I not asking correctly? Am I not using the right language? Is there some secret code I don’t know? Is he pre-occupied? What is his problem? Does he not love me and my daughter like he seems to love everyone else? Boxing in the Lord What’s Christ primary objective?
