Structure of Skeletal Muscle
2
Skeletal muscles…. Control movement of various substances Allow for voluntary control of functions – urination, defecation, swallowing Protect internal organs (ex. Abdominals) Maintain homeostasis by generating heat Each muscle is an organ that contains various integrated tissues
3
Mysia – connective tissue in skeletal muscle
Epimysium Allows muscles to contract Separates muscles from other tissues/organs for independent movement Perimysium Encloses the muscle fascicle, a bundle of muscle fibers Endomysium Encloses individual muscle cells, also called muscle fibers Contains fluid and nutrients brought in by blood vessels
5
Muscle cells – “muscle fibers”
Sarcolemma – plasma membrane Sarcoplasm – cytoplasm Sarcoplasmic reticulum – specialized endoplasmic reticulum – stores, releases, and receives Ca++ cations Sarcomere – functional unit of muscle cell made up of myofibrils Actin – thin filament Myosin – thick filament Troponin – regulatory protein Tropomyosin – regulatory protein
7
Sarcomere – functional unit of the cell
8
Neuromuscular Junction (NMJ)
Where a motor neuron terminal meets the muscle cell (fiber) EVERY SKELETAL MUCLE FIBER (CELL) IN EVERY SKELETAL MUSCLE IS INERVATED BY A MOTOR NEURON AT THE NMJ
