1 DRILL Get our last night’s LETTERING assignment and syllabus.
U1-L2 DRILL Get our last night’s LETTERING assignment and syllabus. Complete the LETTERING assignment on the last page of your course syllabus. Handouts for today: Extra lettering practice worksheets, Student Information Form. As students complete the lettering assignment drill, go around the room and check the quality of their lettering from last night. If the quality is generally poor, tell them that, and assign another lettering practice sheet to the entire class. Drills are a great time to take roll, deal with issues like late students or students missing detention, or to check homework without having to collect it.

2 Yesterday’s Homework Complete classwork lettering assignment
U1-L2 Yesterday’s Homework Complete classwork lettering assignment Entirely read course syllabus Letter notes in margin (~3 words per paragraph) Signed by self and parent/guardian Bring questions to class tomorrow Assignment pad, Class notebook, combination lock (no key), ruler and compass due Friday Reviewing yesterday’s homework for any questions, to remind students what was covered.

3 U1-L2 EXPLORATION Write answers to these questions on your note sheet. Write at least 2 sufficient answers, working with a partner: What is the purpose of imposing rules governing student behavior? What are typical reasons students do not follow those rules? What are good reasons for following those rules? What are the long-term consequences of not following instructions/rules? What are the long-term benefits of following instructions/rules? Will you choose to follow instructions and rules at Poly in order to succeed in whatever it is you envision for yourself?

4 Pass in your signed course syllabus
U1-L2 COURSE SYLLABUS Why rules and instructions exist. Course Syllabus. Write down at least 2 practical ideas to assure student achievement – two ideas that were not included in the syllabus. Pass in your signed course syllabus Rules exist to teach structure and discipline, but also because rules provide a level of workability in the classroom. Rules at POLY are treated like gravity – you can’t argue with gravity, you can’t persuade it: gravity will always pull us down to Earth. Broken rules will always be met with consequences.

5 Note-taking in FOT At Poly we train you for two things:
U1-L2 Note-taking in FOT At Poly we train you for two things: Success in college Success in the world Do not copy every word – it won’t be possible. Capture the main ideas and key details. Let students know that at the U.S. is short on Engineers. Many engineers are being found in India, China, Japan, and elsewhere. Engineers make the most money out of college and are sought-after. Also, Engineering colleges often employ foreign professors. In college, students can’t expect professors to wait until all notes are copied. They move on. So students should abbreviate where possible, not ever intend to copy every word, and pay attention.

6 U1-L2 Homework Complete information form lettering assignment – get it signed Due Friday: Assignment pad, Class notebook, Combination lock (no key), Ruler and compass Only give students the information form if their lettering is of good quality. If not, they must complete additional lettering practice first.
