TABE 11/12: Objectives by Level
Open up a sample of the TABE 11/12 Blue Print from TABETEST.com after showing this slide. On the Blueprint point out the color coding from the pie chart to the detail under the pie chart. Also point out the Low, Med, High Emphasis column that relates to the number of questions on the test. TABE 11/12 Level L includes foundational reading and reading texts to assess beginning readers. TABE 11/12 also includes Mathematics and Language subtests. Together, these subtests are designed to assess the skills of adults with the lowest level of math, reading, and language skills – those who function at a grade range equivalent to K-1. TABE 11/12 Level L presents students the opportunity to show any independent reading skills they have TABE 11/12 Levels E/M/D/A are examinee-read. 6

TABE 11/12: Subtest Objectives
TABE 11&12 Reading Content reflects mature, life- and work-related situations and highlights overlapping objectives, from word-meaning skills to critical-thinking skills Measured using texts and forms familiar to everyday adult lives, as well as through excerpts that reflect our cultural diversity Based on OCTAE CCR standards focused largely on informational texts (e.g. research, scientific, historical information) This slide you are mainly pointing out the last bullet which says the new Reading standards focus on more Reading for Information and not as much Literary reading. 7

TABE 11/12: Subtest Objectives
9
TABE 11/12: Subtest Objectives
TABE 11&12 Mathematics Reflects math application, particularly routine tasks such as estimating quantities and making computations involving time, distance, weight, etc. Item sets are integrated by mathematical contexts appropriate for adults The objective distribution at Level A is very closely aligned with the content distribution of the TASC Mathematics This slide you are mainly pointing out the last bullet which says the new Reading standards focus on more Reading for Information and not as much Literary reading. 9

TABE 11/12: Subtest Objectives
TABE 11&12 Language Assesses skills in grammar, usage, mechanics, sentence formation, and paragraph development. Understanding of word meaning and relationships, context, spelling, capitalization and punctuation in sentences, phrases, and clauses is included Items are presented in meaningful contexts that reflect the writing process as it is applied in life This slide you are mainly pointing out the last bullet which says the new Reading standards focus on more Reading for Information and not as much Literary reading. 11

Test Structure: Item Types
TABE 11/12 contains about half the number of items as the TABE 9/10 Complete Battery. However, the testing time has clearly increased. Students will not yet be familiar with CCR-based high stakes assessment, and we therefore chose these times to give students the best chance at completing their test with the least amount of pressure. Most students will finish their test well before the time is up. THE TESTING TIMES LISTED ON THE SLIDE INCLUDE THE TIME FOR READING THE DIRECTIONS AND DOING THE SAMPLE QUESTIONS (APPROX 20 MINS). FINAL TESTING TIMES WILL BE ADDED TO TABETEST.COM SOON. Due to the potential for longer testing times, Reading – which relies heavily on passages – was divided into two parts. You may give both to your students at one sitting, or you may set them up as separate tests. Mathematics has two sections: A non-calculator section and a calculator section. Online students will have access to an online calculator, and paper/pencil students can use a manual calculator. These two sections of the test are distinct, however, and test takers should not have access to a calculator when taking the non-calculator section. Note that once the non-calculator section is complete in the online test, students cannot return to it. 15

Examinee Access New desktop icon and new opening screen that includes the Online Tools Training. Students will always have the option to take the OTT tutorial before testing but there is a link to the tutorial now at TABEtest.com under the Resources link at the top of the page. (The graphic is hyperlinked to open the OTT) 25

Login Screen New Login Screen only requires a user name and password; an access code is no longer needed. 26
26
Testing Interface New testing interface provides more access to tools and resources. These slides are pulled from the new TABE 11/12 Tutorial that is loaded with actual TABE 11/12 sample questions by level. So this is a real Level A sample. 27

Technology-Enhanced Items
Evidence-Based Selected Response Part A: Answer a question about the passage Part B: Provide evidence to support your answer to Part A Evidence Based Selected Response – 2 part Reading questions. Part A – Which Passage is the Main Idea of the article? It’s a straight multiple choice question Part B – Which Sentence from the article best supports your answer to Part A. This is a new type of skill and question for TABE Students that answer both correct get 2 points. If part A is correct but not part B its 1 point. If Part B is right and Part A is wrong it is 0 points. You can not get the evidence part correct if the first part is wrong. 28

Technology-Enhanced Items
Multi-Select Here is a multiple select question. Note that I shaded in yellow the directions that tell the student there are 2 correct answers. With multiple select we do not try to trick the student. We tell them upfront there are 2 correct answers. 29
29
Technology-Enhanced Items
Drag and Drop Interface supports a variety of technology-enhanced interactions. TABE 11/12 includes numerous TE item types: Drag and Drop, EBSR,, and Multi-Select 30

Physical calculators should only be allowed with the student during the calculator section of the math test. 32

TABE CLAS-E TABE CLAS-E approved in 20 states
New College- and Career-Readiness (CCR) Standards pending for Adult ESL This is straightforward – TABE 9/10 continues to be approved. The US Dept of Ed has not yet set an expiration date for TABE 9/10. We created the Testlets to help bridge the gap in time. We would like to move towards Adaptive but more programs still use paper tests so we need to start with a new TABE 11/12 and then work on TABE Adaptive. MT does not use CLAS-E but we are in a holding pattern with updates to CLAS-E until the new College and Career Readiness Standards for ESL are released this Fall by the US Dept of Ed. This when will drive a new NRS system for ESL in the next few years. 43
