Lifestyle and beliefs In the southern colonies Many people lived on small farms or plantations. Many people Believed in slavery. Plantations had lots of enslaved workers to plant indigo or rice. Plantations were very large but the houses for enslaved people were very small. In Georgia they did not believe in Slavery at first.

Tobacco was the main cash crop in Maryland, Virginia, NC. Carolina, Georgia's rice is so rich they called it Carolina Gold. Colonies had dry land they put down Indigo. On drier lands, rice did not grow well. Here, farmers found they would grow indigo plants. These plants produced a blue dye called indigo, which was used in the clothmaking process. Economics

James Oglethorpe, the Calverts, King George and the Lord Proprietors all helped start the Southern Colony. They settled because they wanted more land. Some also settled for r eligion or to get a new start. When the colonists settled they brought slaves with them to work on their plantations. Key people and reasons for settling

Conflicts throughout the south
Peace was not easy in the south. At first, the settlers and Native Americans were kind to each other. But then the settlers cheated the Natives in trade and pushed them off their lands. More settlers were coming and the Creek, Cherokee, and Powhatan tribes were losing land and hunting areas. This eventually led to the Tuscarora war. Thousands of Natives and settlers died, but in the end, the settler's growing population and superior weapons led them to victory. And that wasn't the last of the south's troubles. The South had a large amount of slaves throughout the region. These slaves often rebelled against their mast ers and even attempted escape. Those who were caught were ofte n returned to their masters. Those who escaped often sought refuge in a slave hideout called fort Mose (mo-say). Conflicts throughout the south
