Safety Rules The Laboratory is a place for serious work.
Points will not be given for following the rules but points may be lost for not following them.

Never under any circumstances attempt unauthorized experiments.

Always Wear Protective Goggles!
Procedure points will be taken off lab grade for noncompliance. Goggles are not to be removed until after you have cleaned up and are sitting at your desk.

Report All Accidents at Once.
Beware of Chips or breaks in the glassware. Remember: Hot glass looks like cold glass.

To Determine if an item has cooled…
Place your hand close to the object to feel if heat is radiating.

All Books and personal items should not be on the lab bench.

Do not taste, Touch or Smell chemicals unless directed to do so.
When making an observation of an odor, fan the vapor towards you. Do not put your face directly over a test tube or beaker.

When heating a test tube, point it away from yourself and others.
Contents may boil out in a rapid and violent manner.

Diluting Acids Do What you oughter. Add Acid to Water.

When Chemicals are Spilled on your skin…
Do Not Panic. Wash with soap and water. On the Lab Bench: Clean acid spills with Baking Soda. Clean Base spills with Vinegar.

Throw all solids into the Waste can or other container as directed.
Some liquids may be disposed of in the sink. Always check with teacher first before disposal if unsure.

Read Labels Twice!! Many chemicals have similar names.
Never return unused chemicals back to the original container. That will contaminate the source.

Electronic Balances are expensive and fragile.
Do not drop. Do not press on pan. Do not place hot objects on pan. Never place chemicals directly n the pan. Use weigh paper.

Watch your neighbor! Be Alert.
Remember, the accident that harms you may not be your own.

Keep your work area neat.
Wipe up spills. Keep Goggle box neat. Dirty glassware goes into the “dirty laundry”. Do not place dirty glassware in the clean bin.
