3 Agenda Homework review Last week’s grammar test (Kimberly, Ken…)
CASAS? Midterm (Ace) Unit 14

May I use your phone? Where can I sit? When could I come back? How do you ask permission with can, could, or may? (can/ could/may + S + base verb) Or Wh+ can/could/ may + subject + base verbs Which questions go with these answers (on board)

6 Unit 14* Certainly. Of course. Sure. No problem. Sorry, but…

7 Unit 14* Which expressions give permission?
Which expressions refuse permission? f. At six g. Right here. Which question goes with answer f? Which question can be replied with answer g?

Do you mind if my friends come over tonight? How do you ask permission with do you mind if? (do you mind + if +subject + simple present tense)

11 On board Not at all. No, I don’t. Go right ahead. Sorry, but…
Which expressions give permission? Why? Which expression refuses permission?

12 Note 1 Use the modals can, could and may to ask permission.
Can I borrow $5? Could I borrow $5? May I borrow $5? Do they all have the same meaning? Could for permission is NOT in the past. May is more formal and polite. (you use it to talk to some one in authority: the police, your boss, your teacher  We often say please when we ask for permission. Could I please take a photograph? Could I take a photograph, please? Please may be placed just before the main verb or at the end of a question.

13 Note 2 Use Do you mind if to ask permission when an action annoys or inconveniences someone. (bothers) Do you mind if I turn up the TV? Do you mind if Lorna stays here? Do you mind if I clean up later? Yes actually, I do. I hate to see a mess in the kitchen. If your roommate is studying and you wan to turn up the TV, you would say, “ Do you mind if I turn up the TV?” because you can tell that it will bother him or her. Be careful!!! Do not use do you mind with please.

14 Note 3 When someone asks permission, you can answer many ways.
We usually use informal expressions instead of modals in answers. Can Sure. Could I close the door? Of course. May Go ahead. Certainly.

15 b. When we use a modal in the answer, we almost always use can
b. When we use a modal in the answer, we almost always use can. We do NOT use could and we rarely use may in short answers. Could I close the window? Sure. Of course. Go ahead.
