Emerging and Evolving Technologies Emerging Technologies 3-D Printing Allows designers to create 3D objects from information created with computer-aided design software and raw materials Specialized printers can create real objects using layer upon layer plastics or other materials to create complex objects with great detail Printing requires complex digital directions but online collaborative resources (e.g. Thingiverse) offer a platform to share files as they are developed For schools, investment in a 3D printer can make models, artifacts, and manipulatives

Emerging and Evolving Technologies Horizon Technologies MOOCs Free large-scale, open-content, open-access online learning opportunities Present content by using multimedia and interactivity and building a community of learners around a topic May enroll thousands of learners, some to explore an area of interest and others completing a course of study to receive a certificate MIT and Harvard have created Edx, a free system to create and support MOOCs

Emerging and Evolving Technologies Horizon Technologies Badges Visual representation recognizing learning of a specific skill or content Offers learners a chance to earn an agreed upon award to see, post, and share online Mozilla's Open Badges provides a platform to standardize, collect, and share recognition for skills and learning from organizations Badges can be offered through community organizations, businesses or education Recognize and repackage skill acquisition for an authentic and complete view of achievement

Emerging and Evolving Technologies Teaching in Tomorrow’s Classroom Model of education must fundamentally change from industrial to 21st century digital society Standards and Technological Change Standards help align instruction with the technology skills to produce K-12 students Emphasis on 4 Cs - Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity Standards (national, state, and local) evolving into those with rich technology requirements for student success a technology-centric world

Emerging and Evolving Technologies Teaching in Tomorrow’s Classroom Instruction in the 21st Century Classroom Teaching in the Digital Age moving away from teacher-centric group instruction to technology-rich instruction tailored to individual and collaborative experiences Model expanding to include hybrid classrooms, flipped classrooms, just-in-time learning, and MOOCs Paradigm shift from Industrial Age instruction to Digital Age will change look and function of schools – may no longer be brick-and-mortar centered
