American History Challenge
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese sea captain, was in charge of the first expedition that proved our planet was round. After sailing around South America, he found a peaceful ocean. What did he name it? The Pacific Ocean The Pacific Ocean is anything but peaceful. Magellan must have been sailing during a calm time.

Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese explorer, who like Columbus, sailed for Spain. 1519 set sail for Asia heading across the Atlantic. Passed through the Strait of Magellan and discovered the Pacific Ocean. He made it to the Indies but died in battle on one of the Philippine Islands. His sailors were the first to circumnavigate the Earth.

How did the Columbian Exchange effect the world?
What were some of the positives of the exchange? Increased trade between Europe, Asia, Africa, and America Profit for many in these areas. A variety of animals and crops What were some of the negatives of the exchange? Disease Many American Indians were killed by small pox, measles and typhus.

Wrap-up the Columbian Exchange
Native Americans of the western plains learned to ride horses and they became an important part of their culture. Pigs adapted to the climate in the Caribbean very easily and became an important food source. Africanized “killer bees” are an example of the Columbian Exchange gone wrong.
