1
Bell Ringer True/False- In a physical change, a new substance is formed. Name some physical properties of this room. What is an example of a chemical property? When is Chapter 2 Vocabulary due? If you lose your notebook, what should you do IMMEDIATELY?
2
Turn and Talk With your front/back partner:
List at least 10 changes you could make to a piece of paper.
3
Chapter 2 Section 3 Changes of Matter
4
2 Types of Changes in Matter:
Physical Change- any change that alters the form or appearance of matter but does not form a new substance Ex: sand sand castle Changes of state- solid, liquid, gas Change in shape or form- bending, crushing, dissolving, breaking, chopping Methods of separating mixtures – filtration and distillation
5
Chemical Change (Chemical Reaction)- a change in matter that produces one or more new substances
Ex: Hydrogen peroxide on a cut Ex: combustion, electrolysis, oxidation, tarnishing, rusting
6
Chemical changes vs. Physical changes – YouTube*
Physical & Chemical Changes – YouTube*
7
Based on what you know now, was the Polyurethane Foam we did the other day, an example of a physical or chemical change?
8
BIG sodium explosion (40g) – YouTube*
Gummy Bear in molten potassium chlorate – YouTube*
9
Sodium Explosion (20g) – YouTube
Huge Chunk of Sodium in Pond – YouTube* Make an Instant Cold Pack from Sodium Acetate. - YouTube
10
Law of Conservation of Mass
Law of Conservation of Mass – matter is not created or destroyed in any physical or chemical change
12
What is Energy? Every chemical or physical change in matter includes a change in energy. Energy is the ability to do work or cause change Ex: Bending a paper clip- requires energy Ice water (absorbs energy from surroundings) Candle wax burns- gives off energy
13
Temperature- a measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter
Thermal energy- the total energy of all the particles in an object
14
Endothermic change- a change in which energy is absorbed, or taken in
Melting of ice Baking a cake Exothermic change- a change in which energy is released, or given off. A fire burning Exothermic reaction Potassium Permanganate
15
Text Connection Name 5 physical changes or chemical changes that occur in your everyday life (text to self) or in the world around you (text to world).
