16 *PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Joyful God, forgive us when we pay more attention to satisfying our own needs than seeking you and your will for our lives;

17 forgive us for being more interested in possessing the material things of life rather than your spiritual gifts.

18 Turn our lives around so that we are looking in the right direction – towards you, for only then can we hope to recognize the signs of your healing presence in the world.

19 (silence is observed for individual reflection and prayer)

CHOIR ANTHEM “Three English Carols” ~arr. Stan Pethel

24 Time With Young Christians

25 PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 1:26-38

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’

27 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great,

28 and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’

29 The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son;

30 and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren
and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.

31 SCRIPTURE READING: Isaiah 55:1-12

32 Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

33 Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your eat, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples,

34 a leader and commander for the peoples
a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near;

35 let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.

36 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout,

37 giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace;

38 the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the fiend shall clap their hands.

39 L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold;

42 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.1
“Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heaven’s all-gracious King”: The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

43 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.2
Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world:

44 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.2
Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, And ever o’er it’s Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

45 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.3
And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow,

46 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.3
Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing.

47 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.4
For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, When with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold;

48 *HYMN #38 “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” v.4
When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing.
