1 Islam & Morality

2 Shariah Law Shariah refers to the set of moral rules that Muslims follow. It was set out by Allah. It sets the path for Muslims to live a devout life.

3 Origins of Shariah The three sources for determining the Shariah:
The Qur’an: detailed passages on how a person should live a good life. The Sunna: a collection of Muhammad’s sayings and actions, taken down and transmitted by his family and friends. The Hadith: a collection of Muhammad’s sayings, actions, and statements about Islam as it was practiced in his time.

4 Fiqh It includes interpretations for new situations that were not covered in the Qur’an, Sunna, or Hadith. It is seen as having less authority than the Qur’an, Sunna, or Hadith.

5 5 Categories of Shariah Law
Obligatory actions or duties: Following the Five Pillars of Islam. Recommended actions: Making charitable contributions beyond zakat and doing volunteer work. Neutral actions: Neutral actions are not addressed by Qur’an, Sunna, or Hadith. Discouraged actions: Divorce; however, no penalty is imposed in Islamic law Forbidden actions: Murder, theft, adultery.

6 Shariah Law in Canada In Canada, Muslims observe shariah in the non-legal moral aspects of their behaviour. There is some concern that the equality rights of women could be threatened in some cases if shariah replaces civil law on matters such as family disputes, marriage, and divorce.
