1 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTRACTION
When we talk about interpersonal attraction in social psychology, we are using the term broadly to refer to everything from friendship and admiration to lust and love → three key factors influencing attraction of all types are proximity, attractiveness, and similarity

2 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTRACTION: PROXIMITY
Proximity – geographical nearness – is friendship’s most powerful predictor; studies reveal we are most likely to marry someone close to us: mating starts with meeting → the mere exposure effect says repeated exposure to novel stimuli increases liking of them; we are comfortable with what is familiar

3 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTRACTION: PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS
Physical attractiveness not only influences person perception, but it is a key determinant in romantic attraction as well (the good news, most of us don’t see ourselves as unattractive) → reproductive cues influence attraction; in general men like a youthful, fertile appearance; while women are attracted to healthy-looking, mature, masculine (and affluent) men

4 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTRACTION: PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS
→ the matching hypothesis says that our partners are likely to match our own level of physical attractiveness (which evidence supports) with less attractive people placing less emphasis on looks

5 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF ATTRACTION: SIMILARITY
Along with proximity and an acceptable physical appearance, the third component of attraction involves having similar attitudes, beliefs, and interests, as well as similar socio-economic indicators → similarity breeds content (and contentment breeds similarity) and dissimilarity fosters disfavor (opposites don’t attract, they retract), but partners can and do modify to become more alike

6 ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE From initial impressions, to friendship, attraction can blossom into romantic love; passionate love has been described as the aroused state of intense personal absorption in another present at the beginning of the relationship → the highs (and lows) of passionate love typically fade, maturing into a steadier companionate love: the deep affectionate attachment

7 WHOLE LOTTA LOVE → the passion-facilitating hormones (testosterone, dopamine, adrenaline) subsides, giving way to oxytocin, which supports feelings of trust, calmness and bonding

8 HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE? → perhaps due to its short duration, many societies reject passionate love as an adequate reason for marrying, choosing instead (or having the choice made for them) similar backgrounds as the basis

9 LOVE ME TENDER Research has supported the theory that the attachment relationships we form as infants follow us into adulthood and parallel our love relations → those with secure attachments will have committed, satisfying relationships compared with those with anxious-ambivalent or avoidant attachment styles

10 JUNGLE LOVE Evolutionary psychologists believe physical appearance is so key to attraction because it suggests vigor, health, and fertility; facial symmetry shows good genes and an absence of abnormalities → men prefer a young, healthy woman – as indicated by their waist-to-hip ratio – for their reproductive fitness; women prefer ambitious, social climbers w/financial potential who can take care of offspring
