Question 1

Question 1: The Feelings/Meanings One
After completing Question 3, move on to Question 1. This question is also worth 20 marks. You are expected to spend around 45 minutes on this question. In this question, you are going to be rewarded not only for identifying relevant material in the passage but also for development of those ideas and use of supporting detail. Some ideas might be quite subtle and implied. This means that you will need to use any clues and details you noticed when you were reading in order to write a convincing response.

Top tips: Read around any difficult words/phrases to help you make sense of any challenging vocabulary. Master the art of re-phrasing (putting quotes into your own words) Start by trying out synonyms for different words e.g. a synonym for ‘scared’ is ‘afraid’. Gradually try synonyms for more difficult vocabulary. Practise honing your inference and deduction skills. Remember this is primarily a READING paper. Take your time, think carefully and write in detail where necessary. It is possible to finish this paper quite quickly but you are unlikely to achieve top marks if you do so.
5
Look! You get to use fun colours…
10-15 Minutes You should be provided with 3 coloured highlighters. The reading and planning time is built into the 45 minutes you should spend on this question. Don’t rush through these planning stages, they are key to gaining the marks in your answer. For each bullet point you are looking for 5 pieces of information (there will be far more than 5 to choose from that will be relevant!) The first bullet point should have information that is fairly easy to find... look for these 5 points using your first coloured highlighter (e.g. yellow). Re-read the second bullet point, change colours and read the text again, picking out another 5 quotes (again there will be more than 5 possibilities). Use a different colour highlighter. Re-read the final bullet point. This one is harder as it tests your skills of inference and deduction. Highlight 5 quotations in your final colour.

Task 2 - Complete the table 5-10 mins
Remember to leave yourself about 20 minutes to write your response Your plan should not be wordy! Try using key facts from the extract to strengthen your reading response.
7
Question 1 top tips: DVD! Development Details Voice
8
Details: What details can you add (facts/figures) to your points?
These can be dates, times, names, temperatures. Any details that you cannot change or vary but prove you have read the text!
9
Who is talking in your piece?
10
How can you develop your points?
Use synonyms and varying sentence starters to develop and change your points as you would in your writing. Can you develop your point even further by adding opinion or effect?
11
There are three parts to a complete answer and good candidates will answer all three well. Be balanced!

QUESTION 1 MARK SCHEME- READING
13
QUESTION 1 MARK SCHEME- WRITING
14
Good answers… Sustain a convincing voice throughout, integrating detail carefully. Incorporate personal reactions (based on inferences/details presented in the text) and avoid simply re-telling. Able to use a variety of effective synonyms- to strengthen their vocabulary and prevent lifting words/phrases from the text. Able to vary sentence structures – again to avoid lifting exact words/phrases from the text. Able to display a variety of ambitious punctuation for effect. Remember you are awarded marks for the quality of your writing!
15
Weak Answers… You have retold events- like a story.
You have lifted/copied exact words and phrases from the text and not put them in your own words. You have not mentioned enough points for each bullet point (remember 5 ideas for each bullet point). You have not covered enough ideas for bullet point 3- therefore, not all answers are well-balanced/covered. You have not written in paragraphs and taken care with your basic SPaG (Spelling, punctuation and grammar).
