Graduate Course: New online course: LART601 Understanding Cultural Diversity (SP10) Developed this course to fulfill a need in graduate division and to use as a test course for content similar to what would be needed for one course in the ESL Program Specialist track. This was my first online course, which was well received by students and administrators.
Teaching of this course led to an invitation to teach a section of SPEC202 Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in Education Cultural & Linguistic Diversity in spring 2011.

ESL Program Specialist Track: New track (5 courses): This new track is for certified teachers and candidates currently enrolled in teacher training programs Courses will be offered at the graduate level and are designed to prepare candidates for certification through PDE as ESL Program Specialists.
Currently course syllabi have been created and approved through UCC. New guidelines were instituted by PDE so original offerings are being revised. Conducted needs analysis survey. Proposal for new track being made thru PASSHE. Then application will be made through PDE.

ACTFL International Convention, Philadelphia, PA. Nov Making the Most of Teacher Candidate Field Experiences Co-presenters: Steven Klebacha, SCASD; and Doug Madenford, M.Ed. KCSD, mentor teachers cooperating with LHU FL teacher education program In this sessions I partner with two mentor teachers whom I have worked with in the past in training teacher candidates. We highlighted problems observed (in candidates enrolled in language teacher training programs) during field experiences and student teaching placements and suggest ways in which these candidates could be better prepared to avoid areas of weakness frequently observed in the field through explicit training and activities.

International Education Week, Mansfield University of PA. Nov , 2012 Keynote speaker: Ways to Foster International Connections while Attending US Universities (Nov. 15, 2012)
(Featuring video of LHU International Students and one LHU alumnus with international travel experience) I was invited to serve as the keynote speaker for a session culminating a week-long series of events highlighting international topics in hopes of fostering a mindset of globalization among the students at Mansfield University As part of my speech I invited current international students to participate in an interview session asking a set of key questions. This video became part of my presentation and was very well received. Sponsors asked if we would consider shared events between international students at Mansfield and LHU in the future.

PANEL: Why Studying Language is Important and What Teachers can do to Advocate for their Language Programs This panel provided important arguments in favor of language learning. Advocacy skills are critical to foster support for language learning and teaching. I participated on this panel and brought my teacher candidates to the conference so they could demonstrate commitment to professionalism standards.

International Society for Language Studies Annual Conference, Oranjestad, Aruba June 2011 Connections and Comparisons with Other Cultures through Games This session discussed using games originating from other cultures as a means of exploring culture in authentic ways. This presentation was unrelated to the Gassessment presentation which discussed using interactive games of various kinds as a means to teach language concepts.
This session occurred during a season of severe economic cutbacks at LHU. Despite the fact financial support for this conference was withdrawn, I fulfilled my commitment to attend and present using personal funds.

ACTFL Annual Convention, Boston, MA Nov Gassessment: Using Games to Assess Students' Language Achievement Co-presented with José Ricardo-Osorio, Shippensburg University of PA This session discussed using games of various kinds as a means to teach language concepts. The session provided links to many resources, rubrics for selecting games as assessment tools, valid means of assessment, and explaining why games are an effective tool in language classrooms because they naturally provide the give- and-take interaction mimicked in conversation. This session is entirely different than the presentation that discusses using games from other cultures to teach culture.

Central Mountain High School Department of Foreign Languages, Mill Hall, PA Oct How high school foreign language teachers can better prepare students for success in college language courses The chair of the department of foreign languages from the local high school asked me to invite our department to share with the language teachers at Central Mountain High School insights into preparing high school language students to succeed in advanced courses in the university. I surveyed LHU colleagues regarding personal observations and recommendations and then met with the teachers to share the results.

Awarded Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award 2000 (nominated every year) I had already been teaching college students Spanish for six years by the time I arrived at LHU. I gained many insights into the dynamics involved in college teaching during these years. My training in education at the graduate level set me apart as a language teacher above those who simply were native speakers of Spanish. It takes both an expert knowledge of the subject matter coupled with an understanding of how language should be taught and learned that creates a successful learning environment for students.
