Canada – Basic Facts The name "Canada" was derived from the Huron-Iroquois word “Kanata”, which means "settlement" or "meeting place." Made up of ten provinces and three Territories. Capital is Ottawa 2nd largest country in land area. Parliamentary Democracy (Canada is technically a constitutional monarchy and the head of state is Queen Elizabeth. The Canadian Constitution limits her powers in government and she is generally considered a figurehead leader only) Prime Minister – head of parliament Parliament = Legislative and Executive combined Canada's Major Parties Liberal Party of Canada Conservative Party of Canada Le Bloc Québécois New Democratic Party of Canada Green Party of Canada More than 5,000 miles (8,050 km) of border with the US.

First immigrants came from Asia Their descendants are the Native Americans; 2.5 million in the U.S. and 700,000 in Canada.
