1 Proactive in Action 01.04

2 Learning Targets I can collaboratively identify an issue in the school and the community that needs to be solved, identify a proactive solution, and develop next steps for monitoring and assessing the issue. I can evaluate a plan to solve a community issue and determine the most viable options for affecting change. Success Criteria: I can identify and explain an issue in the school I can identify and justify a potential solution to the issue. I can evaluate a plan and recommend it for further action.

3 Want to be an Activist? TED Talk: Want to be an Activist As you listen to the TED Talk consider and identify the following things: What was the speaker’s issue? What was the proposed solution? How and to whom did the speaker direct her actions to have the most impact? How successful do you think this solution was? Were there any potential drawbacks?

4 What’s an issue that impacts you at school?
Using the Planning Guide explore an issue that impacts you here at school. You and your group will be planning multiple possible solutions and selecting what you all feel is the best possible solution. You’ll be putting together a poster that reflects the following elements: Your problem (including why it’s a problem) Pros/Cons of the solution What your best solution is and a rationale for it And who else needs to be involved in the solution (Principal/Student Council/Other teachers) Example: School starts too early, students sleep in class...

5 Day Two Learning Target: I can evaluate a plan to solve a community issue and determine the most viable options for affecting change. Success Criteria: I can evaluate a plan and recommend it for further action.

6 Listening to Presentations
What does it mean to be an active listener? As people present, consider which ideas are ready to be moved to the next step (presented to a principal, teacher, etc.) and which ones might need further refinement or to be implemented at a later date (bell schedules are important, but that’ll be tough to change during a school year, but might be good to bring up in June). After every group has gone, use the stickers given to you to vote on a project to move forward to the next step and one that needs to be further developed.

7 Turning it into a proposal
Let’s turn the issue we selected into a more formal proposal. We need to address the following things: Summary of the problem- what’s the issue/why is it an issue? Group impacted by problem Group being focused on to help- why are you asking this group for assistance? Solution and rationale- What about your solution makes it optimal? After we’ve recorded this, it’ll be sent to the appropriate person for next steps!

8 Closure How did being proactive and planning things through impact their feelings on the issue you identified as needing to be addressed? What are their next steps for the issue that they identified as needing to be solved?
