Purpose of the United Nations
Maintain international peace and security Maintain friendly relations among nations Cooperate in solving international problems and promoting respect for human rights To be a center for harmonizing actions of nations

How does it do that? Provides the means to resolve international conflicts Formulate policies on matters affecting a range of countries Opportunity to balance global interdependence and national interests when addressing international problems Create mechanisms to achieve social progress and development

MDG #1 – Eradicating Poverty and Hunger
By 2015, reduce the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day by half By 2013, reduce the proportion of people who suffer from hunger by half Assist people who cannot fulfill their basic needs such as food, water, clothing, and shelter Poor harvest – dry landscape and harsh climate prevents crops from growing Shortage of food Affordability is an issue

Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people

Goal #2 - Achieve Universal Primary Education
Ensure a full course of primary schooling for all boys and girls by 2015

Goal #3 – Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, and at all levels of education no later than 2015.

Goal # 4 - Reduce the Mortality Rate by two-thirds
Lower the number of children dying while they are very young Disease – living in environments where there is not protection from germs such as breathing in unhealthy air Malnutrition – lack of nutrients because of poor diet

Goal #5 – Reduce the maternal mortality ratio
Achieve access to reproductive health Helping mother get the opportunity to see a doctor when they are pregnant Regular check-ups Proving them with medication

Goal #6 – Stop the spread of HIV/AIDs
Allowing people to get treatment Lowering the cost of medication Reverse the incidence of HIV/AIDs and other diseases

Goal #7 – Integrate principles of sustainable development
Reverse the loss of environmental resources Reduce the loss of biodiversity Provide people with sustainable access t safe drinking water and basic sanitation Significant improvement in the lives of those people living in slums

Goal # 8 – An approach to development
Address special needs of least developed countries Address the special needs of landlocked developing countries Deal with the debt problems of developing countries Partner with the private sector to make new technologies and information available
