1 8 Millennium Development Goals
Swaziland, Kiribati Micah Roberts, Camille Wallace

2 Goal 1 Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

3 Target: Halving the proportion of people whose income is less than a dollar a day.
In Swaziland 60% of the people are employed. In Kiribati 61.8% of the people are employed. Both Swaziland and Kiribati are in need of accelerating work on this target in order to achieve MDG number one.

4 Goal 2 Achieve Universal Primary Education

5 Target: To ensure children everywhere are able to complete a primary education
The Literacy rate in Swaziland is 87.8% and 72% of people completed a primary education. In Kiribati there is an 82% literacy rate and 70% of the people completed a primary education. Both Swaziland and Kiribati are on track with achieving this target by 2015 with both literacy rates and completed primary education well above 50%.

6 Goal 3 Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

7 Target: To eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education
In Swaziland 69% of girls have completed their primary education Swaziland is well on its way to providing a primary education for girls and for achieving this goal and acquiring the target. In Kiribati 47.7% of girls have completed their primary education. Kiribati is on track at providing a primary education for not only female children but all children but providing and encouraging empowerment of women is falling behind.

8 Goal 4 Reduce Child Mortality

9 Target: To reduce the under five mortality rate by two thirds.
Child mortality rate in Swaziland is 73 deaths per 1,000. Swaziland is off track in achieving this goal by 2015 and is in need of more data so they can see what they will need to improve. Child mortality rate in Kiribati is 37 deaths per 1,000. Kiribati is only slightly off track but still needs to pick up their efforts in order to reach the goal for 2015.

10 Goal 5 Improve Maternal Health

11 Target: Reducing maternal mortality ratio by three quarters
In Swaziland 320 out of 100,000 women died during child birth. In the charts found it says that acceleration is required in order for Swaziland to meet this goal by 2015. In Kiribati only 9 out of 100,000 women died during child birth The charts also say that Kiribati it way off track in meeting this target by 2015.

12 Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

13 Target: To have halted and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015
In Swaziland 26.5% of the population were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. With this percentage, Swaziland is well on its way to being able to stop and reverse affects of HIV/AIDS. In Kiribati .1% of the population were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. When looking at this percentage one would think that this target has been well reached before the projected date, but looking at the status of the country in each millennium development goal, Kiribati is off track in reducing this already small number.

14 Goal 7 Ensure Environmental Sustainability

15 Target: To integrate the principle of sustainable development and reverse the loss of environmental resources. Carbon emissions in Swaziland were .86 metric tons per capita. Swaziland is on it way to reducing its loss of environmental resources. Carbon emissions in Kiribati were .64 metric tons per capita. Data gaps make it hard to see Kiribati’s progression in this goal.

16 Goal 8 Develop a Global Partnership for Development

17 Target: To develop further an open, rule based predictable, non-discriminatory trading
Swaziland has four main trade partners which include South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia. Kiribati has five main trade partners that includes Thailand, Japan, Mexico Morocco and Turkey. There wasn’t a status for either of these countries but with research both look like they are doing well with establishing good trading systems with countries that need and provide the right products.

18 Conclusion Both Swaziland and Kiribati have their own individual areas where work need to be done in order to complete these targets and goals by 2015.
