1 Earth’s Natural Resources

2 Every man-made product is composed of natural resources.
Natural Resources- elements from the earth that are not man-made but can be used by people (thus they have economic value). Every man-made product is composed of natural resources.

3 Types of Natural Resources:
Minerals: substances from the earth that are not living or they are made from non-living things: iron ore, copper, diamonds, gold, bauxite, etc.

4 Types of Natural Resources:
Fossil Fuels: substances that came from once living things- oil, coal, natural gas; What are fossil fuels so economically valuable?

5 Types of Natural Resources:
Fossil Fuels: substances that came from once living things- oil, coal, natural gas; can be used as a energy resource.

6 Other types of natural resources: trees, fresh water, food, animals.
?

7 All natural resources can be “classified”, or categorized, into one of two types:

8 Classification of Natural Resources:
Renewable Resources ?????????

9 Classification of Natural Resources:
Renewable Resources resources that replace themselves naturally or if people can grow or raise continuous supplies of them- forests, animals, food.

10 Why is oil production expected to begin to decrease significantly in this decade?

11 Classification of Natural Resources: Nonrenewable Resources
natural resources that can never be replaced, or are consumed much faster than nature can create them (minerals, oil, natural gas)

12 Characteristics of the Earth’s Natural Resources

13 Why is oil such a valuable natural resource?

14 Why is oil such a valuable natural resource?
Because demand for it is high.

15 Why are diamonds such a valuable natural resource?

16 Why are diamonds such a valuable natural resource?
Because supply of them is limited.

17 So, then, how is the value of a natural resource determined?

18 Characteristics of the Earth’s Natural Resources
The value of the Earth’s natural resources depends on use (demand) and supply (how much of it is there).

19 Characteristics of the Earth’s Natural Resources
2) Most natural resources are not evenly distributed over the earth . The scarcity of certain natural resources has led to trade (import/ export) among the world’s countries.

20 Characteristics of the Earth’s Natural Resources
3) The natural distribution of the earth’s natural resources greatly influences how countries relate to one another. World Oil Reserves by Region

21 Color & label the OPEC member nations

22 World Oil Reserves by Region
What area/ region of the world has most of the world’s known oil reserves? World Oil Reserves by Region Color in your map on page 4 to match this one

23 Which region of the world used the most oil at the end of the 20th century? How much?

24 The United States has only 3. 5% of the world’s oil, yet the U. S
The United States has only 3.5% of the world’s oil, yet the U.S. uses 24% of the world’s oil.

25 What do you see in this graph that will be a huge problem for the United States in the years to come?

26 So, which area of the world would the United States have a greater political interest in, Africa or the Middle East? World Oil Reserves by Region

27 What is causing the boundaries to change for these nations?
Is this something that the US should be concerned about? Should the US take any action?

28 Letter to the Cabinet Based on the info presented you are to write a letter to one of the above mentioned Cabinet Members. Write a letter to Secretary Mathis if you believe the US should take a greater US response to the issues occurring in the Middle East. If you believe the US should increase their pursuit in alternate fuel/energy conversation Secretary of Defense James Mattis Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke
