1 My Totem Pole Day 1

2 Challenge Sculpt a Totem Pole consisting of 3 animals using hand building techniques to symbolize YOUR culture.

3 What is a Totem Pole? In Native American culture, a Totem Pole is a symbol of a family or individual. How many animals do you see in this Totem Pole?  Sitka Totem Pole, Tommy Josephs, 2007.

4 What is a Totem Pole? Each animal on a Totem Pole symbolizes a character trait of an individual. Example: A dog symbolizes someone that is faithful.

5 My Culture I was born in the United States, but my parents are from Peru. Even though I live in Virginia, my culture is Peruvian. For Christmas, we have turkey on Christmas Eve and open presents at midnight.

A bat symbolizes SECRECY A dolphin symbolizes HAPPINESS A spider symbolizes WISDOM A lion symbolizes FAMILY

A butterfly symbolizes TRANSFORMATION A llama symbolizes HARD WORK A parrot symbolizes JOY A turtle symbolizes PEACE

9 Buffalo Bronze Vessel Buffalo was an important part of Chinese culture because it helped with farming.

10 Rhinoceros Bronze Vessel
The Rhinoceros was one of the most important animals in Chinese fables. It symbolized long life.

11 Planning day! Fill out planning sheet. Think about your culture and what animals symbolize. Research 1 animal from your culture, 1 animal from a different culture and design YOUR own animal symbol. When you are finished, raise your hand and you will share your research with a partner.

25 Continue building your Animals
3 animals. 1 animal that symbolizes your culture, 1 animal that symbolizes a different culture and 1 symbol for an animal you made up. Add pattern techniques. DEMO cut, score and weld to assemble the Totem Pole.

26 DEMO Gather around table for a cut, score and weld Demo to assemble your Totem Pole.

Break into groups of 4 to talk about your progress so far, I will come around if you have any questions.

29 Today! Demo Glazing Glaze your Totem Poles
When finished with glaze, fill out and turn in reflection and check list.

30 DEMO Gather around table for a glazing demo.

31 FINAL CHECKLIST Pinch, Coil or Slab? 3 animals:
Pattern design using incising, impressing or relief. Form a Totem Pole by cut, score and weld. Glaze. Written Reflection
