3 Pratheeba.S PRIMARY ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE
THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE - I ARCHITECTURE First Year B. ArchStudents Periyar Maniammai University, Vallam

4 Out-of-class Activity Design -1
Learning Objective(s) of Out-of-Class Activity After watching videos, students are able to: List and Identify primary elements of Architecture (Recall - Understand) Interpret primary two and three dimensional elements in architecture (Knowledge) Key Concept(s) to be covered Recall and identify the primary elements of architecture

5 Out-of-class Activity Design - 2

6 Out-of-class Activity Design - 3
Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective Learning Objective Assessment Strategy Expected duration (in min) Additional Instructions (if any) 1. List primary elements 2. Identify primary 1. What are the primary elements in architecture? 2. Identify primary elements in your living room 5 10 watch video 1 and answer Q1. watch video 2 and answer Q2. Submit your answers before coming to the next class. Expected activity duration 15

7 In-class Activity Design -1
Learning Objective(s) of In - Class Activity At the end of the class, students will be able to, Identify primary elements of architecture Interpret primary elements of architecture Key Concept(s) to be covered Able to Interpret primary elements in building examples and they use these primary elements while designing spaces

8 In-class Activity Design -1
Active Learning activities Think-Pair-Share Concept clarification using. Peer Instruction

9 In-class Activity Design -2
Active Learning activities Strategies Recall primary elements. Brief introduction about primary elements. Point, Line, Plane and Volume

10 In-class Activity Design -2
Active Learning activity TPS Strategy Peer instruction Think and write – 5 minutes Q1. How many point elements are there in this picture? Q2. Identify the planes that are used to define the space?

11 In-class Activity Design -2
Active Learning activity TPS Strategy Pair – 5 minutes Instruction: Now pair up and compare your answers & Agree on one final answer. While students are pairing and discussing, instructor verifies to 2-3 pairs to see what they are doing.

12 In-class Activity Design -2
Active Learning activity TPS Strategy Share – 10 minutes Instruction: Instructor asks a group to share their answer with class and see whether there are different answers. After sharing is done, instructor gives feedback and explains the correct answer. By doing these activities, students are able to explore the primary elements and apply in their design.

13 In-class Activity Design -2
Justify why the above is an active learning strategy In the above strategies, 1. Students will go beyond mere listening to the concept and taking notes and doing sketching of the examples of primary elements. 2. They are able to choose different primary elements that will be suitable for particular architectural spaces. They think deeply about the concept since they were familiarized in out-of-class and do higher order thinking of analyzing the architectural elements in all the buildings. They get new concepts from both instructor and through peer discussion.
