5 National Governing Bodies
Responsible for sport within specific countries 2016 – Sport England recognised 33 NGB’s for sport. Some NGB’s are larger than others Some NGB’s are financially self sufficient, some rely on subsidies from Sport England and National Lottery Discussion point: Why would some NGBs need financial support? What makes others not need this? (money from tv etc)

6 International Sports Federations?
Responsible for the formulation of rules that NGB’s will ensure are followed and applied Organise international competitions Arrange sponsorship and tv contracts for international competitions

7 NGB and ISF regulation of rules and Laws
The rules decided by NGB and ISF determine how a sport can be won or lost. Sports often introduce rules to make them more entertaining for spectators! Changing rules requires a trial period; once the ISF agrees the rule is appropriate, the change is sanctioned. In most sports, the regulations are updated regularly. Paralympics Sports example – Swimming Competitors are placed into categories of disability that tries to make events fair. 11 Task – The Rule Game For a sport of your choice Think of the following: A new rule that could be implemented to make the sport more entertaining An adaptation to a rule to make it more effective in a match Justify your new rules and why they would be a positive change?

12 Competition rules/laws and regulations
All competitions have space and time restraints, rules and a clear competitive structure. some sports – performers are matched or categorized to ensure their opponents are given equal circumstances during competition. Examples – Paralympic sports – participants with different disabilities are categorized to compete with individuals with similar disabilities. The focus of sport is to determine who is the best

13 Competitions Domestic and International competitions run frequently but some more frequently than others. Remember we are only concerned with elite level only. Focus on your one team and one individual sport and find out does it have: Domestic is UK based Domestic league/cups? European League/cups? World League? World Cup? Olympic Games? Commonwealth Games?

Ultimate objective is for there to be a clear winner League format and knockout tournament most common. Students come up with definition of each one

15 Olympic and Paralympic games
The modern Olympic games are often seen by many as the biggest international sporting event In the world. (more than 200 nations participate) Feature both winter and summer games. The Paralympic games – international event for elite athletes with disabilities. Follow the Olympics every two years. During both Olympics and Paralympics, the number of entrants are limited within each event through ranking systems. Competition during the Olympics is heavily regulated to ensure fair competition. Students come up with definition of each one

16 World Championships and other tournaments
Some sports hold regular competitions to enable teams and performers from all over the world to compete against each other to determine who is the best Formats of the competitions vary enormously, including straight knockout competitions and ones that involve mini leagues or group stages before progression to a knockout stage. Can you think of competitions for different sports? Students come up with definition of each one

17 Extended Learning Write a 2 page summary that covers your one individual and one team sport. Within this report needs to be the following: Brief history overview of the two sports Rules and Regulations and how these have changed over time The NGB and ISF for them Competitions both domestic and internationally Sporting etiquette
