Unit 2 – Data Collection & Problem Solving
ECS Unit 2 – Days 1-2
2
Standard 4 – Computing and Data Analysis
Learning Objectives: Explain the difference between data used for making a case (Advocacy Data) and data that informs a discovery (Discovery Data). Describe and form good research questions. Read this

Communications Methods and Data Chart
Do this Communications Methods and Data Chart Open/ take out your Data Journal that was due today. Screenshot it and paste the picture below (see the next slide if you’re not sure what it is)
4
Screenshot your completed Data Journal and paste it on slide 3

You give off data every day.
Human Data Read this You give off data every day. Your address, telephone number, accounts all give off specific identifying data. These things give hints as to how you are feeling: your facial expressions, the energy/lethargy of your walk, your tone of voice. Your grades and citizenship give off another kind of data about you.
6
Important Definition What is Data? Read and DO this Data is Raw Input – information BEFORE it has been processed. People watch you and collect data about you every day. If a mother sees a toddler acting cranky, she might process that data and come up with the idea/information that “This child needs a nap.” Record 3 types of Raw Input (Data) that you witnessed today:
7
Aggregate Data To aggregate means to combine.
Important Definition Aggregate Data Read this To aggregate means to combine. Combined, or Aggregate data, is often used for PROFILING. For instance, the FBI collects data from Facebook pages, text messages, phone calls, location and puts that data together to create a picture or profile of a person.
8
Advocacy Data Advocacy data, is data used for making a case.
Important Definition Advocacy Data Advocacy data, is data used for making a case. AGGREGATE data is often used for ADVOCACY Attorneys and Politicians often use Advocacy Data in court or to persuade the public In your Daily Journal, list 3 ways in which you have used Advocacy Data
9
Communications Methods and Data Chart
Do this Communications Methods and Data Chart Journal Write down (here) 5 ways you gave off Data this week: Define Data: Define Aggregate Data Explain how AND why aggregate data might be used as opposed to 1 data set:
10
Communications Methods and Data Chart
Do this Linking Data directly back to you You will write about the possible implications of data being used to “profile” you – after you read the article assigned to you Article Read one of these assigned articles about aggregate data New York Times article on Aggregate Data New York Times Technology and Privacy Article Use the Skimming and Scanning Form to read the article. Skim your article, then write your first impressions in column 1 After you have discussed these, look for “Fast Facts,” and record those in the middle column Think about the article, and then write your final thoughts in column 3 Take a picture of your completed form and paste it on the next slide Dropbox your Skimming/Scanning Form
11
My Skimming/Scanning Form
Take a picture of your completed form and paste it above.
12
Record what you learned from the article
Do this Which article did you read: Write a paragraph (here) on what you learned about Data collection from the article:
13
Collecting Data Do this Advocacy – using data to make a case
Discovery – Collecting data to document a situation and then learn from it Record here: When and how would you use each of these? (Give 3 examples of each) Advocacy data – Discovery data -
14
Solving Community Problems
Problem: The PTA wants to change the school rules so that all students MUST wear uniforms to school. Your group is asked to collect data to see if this is a good idea. Use the next slides to outline how you would: Approach the problem (make a plan) What type of data you would need to collect How you would collect and analyze the data Read this
15
Research Questions Do this Approach the problem: What research questions might you ask in this case? What is/are your research question/s? What data will you need to collect? Why did you choose to collect that data for this question?
16
Research Questions Do this What are the limits of this data? (What will it NOT tell you?) What should you confidently be able to say based on your data? What perspectives might be left out, based on your data?
17
Summary Do this In a paragraph, describe the important facts in this unit that you have learned about how we collect and use data in today’s world:
18
How to turn this in for a grade
Do this Save this to your computer as we do in class Example: if your name is Alice Student, and you are in period 8, your file will be saved as 8StudentAliceUnit2Days1-2 Go to Password is “student” Add your file to the Dropbox Don’t forget to Dropbox your Skimming/Scanning Form. Congratulations! You are done!
