1 Op Art

2 What is Op Art? Formally known as Optical Illusion Art
A style of art that uses repeated geometric lines, shapes & colors to create visual effects including illusions of vibration, foreground-background confusion, and an exaggerated sense of depth. Abstract Movement developed in the late 1950’s

3 Our brain interprets what we see
Optical Illusion Our brain interprets what we see When the elements of art are manipulated to create a distorted and visually misleading image (one that differs from what we think is true) it creates an OPTICAL ILLUSION

22 Color Requirements You will select 2 sets of complementary colors to work with Complementary colors are opposite on the color wheel You will need to tint and shade your complements Tint - add white Shade - add a small amount of the complement The tints & shades of your complements will go in opposite directions!

23 Color Illusion

24 Getting Started - Drawing
For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to create an optical illusion through the manipulation of line, shape, color, and form to achieve visual movement in your own artwork. First, create 4 different preliminary sketches (each with different optical illusion). Your sketches should each demonstrate a different optical illusion. Put a lot of thought and effort into your sketches, as they will each be worth 2 points. Next, on a sheet of 12” x 18” drawing paper, make a half-inch border around your paper and draw your most desired preliminary sketch. Be sure that your entire composition is well balanced (no awkward and overly empty spaces).

25 Final Composition - Painting
Once your final drawing is complete, choose 2 sets of complementary colors and paint the given Tints and Shades worksheet (see teacher exemplar). Once you get the knack of properly tinting and shading (using complementary colors), begin painting your final drawing using one color at a time. Begin by tinting the color gradually as it recedes into the distance. Next, place your original color’s complement next to your original color, only inverse its value (make it darker as it recedes into the distance) through shading. In essence, you will be placing complementary colors next to each other AND placing dark values next to light value. using the 2 sets of complementary colors. Use this method of manipulative painting for the second set of complementary colors as well; this method will ensure that your artwork creates an optical illusion.
