1
Matter is everything around you!
What is Matter?
2
Matter: a substance that occupies space and has a mass, all physical objects are made of matter, the smallest unit of matter is an atom
3
Examples of Matter Anything that has mass & volume
Pencil, book, car, etc. That includes you Anything that has mass & volume
4
All matter has…… Mass & Volume
5
VOLUME Definition Units of measure Instruments
Volume of regular solids, irregular solids and liquids
6
The space that matter occupies
Can measure the volume of a gas, liquid and solid Units of measure = mm³, cm³, m³, ml, L, etc Definition
7
The following instruments can be used to measure volume (V)
Ruler Tape measure Graduated cylinder (most common) Overflow can (less precise) Instruments
8
How do we measure the volume of LIQUIDS?
Use a graduated cylinder We need to measure how much water was displaced *Make sure you look at the bottom of the meniscus Meniscus
9
Volume Measurement Methods
Matter Unit of measure Instrument Method Regular solid mm³, cm³, m³ Ruler or tape measure V=length x width x height Irregular solid mL or L Overflow can and/or graduated cylinder Measure V of water that comes out of overflow can Measure water displaced when placed in graduated cylinder Liquid Graduated cylinder Pour liquid into graduated cylinder Volume Measurement Methods
10
MASS
11
Mass: an indication of the amount of matter in a substance, calculated in kilograms(kg), grams(g) or milligrams(mg) Definitions
12
Definitions- continued
Balance: an instrument that measures the mass of an object in grams, also known as a scale Weight: the vertical force exerted by a mass due to gravity measured in Newtons (N) measure of how heavy an object is measured in pounds (lb) Definitions- continued
13
What is mass and how is it measured?
Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of. Example: Elephant = A LOT of matter = LARGE MASS Paperclip = very little matter = SMALL MASS We measure mass with a triple beam balance. Add the value of the riders to find the mass in grams (g) *Make sure the balance is calibrated to 0 before you begin!
