Why Wireless Gas Monitoring?
The Challenge Wiring gas detectors limits their suitability for some applications Many sites with high risk for dangerous gas leaks are particularly difficult or impossible to wire Combustible and toxic gases have different vapor densities – further complicating installation challenges The need to wire gas detectors for power and communication has limited their suitability for implementation into many applications This has been a common pain point for customers since it is extremely difficult and expensive to wire new detection points in many of their highest-risk sites. In many cases there are no feasible means to add wired points at all Additionally every combustible and toxic gas has a different vapor density – Some are “lighter than air” like methane and will tend to rise when released – accumulating in ceiling structures – others are “heavier than air” like Hydrogen sulfide and will gather in low points. This means that point gas sensors need to be installed where gases may become present. This further complicates installation due to the need to install additional wiring, conduit, and junction boxes [introduce first image with first bullet and second image with third bullet] Wired Gas Detector

Introducing the Rosemount 928 Wireless Gas Monitor
Hydrogen Sulfide Combustible Gases Carbon Monoxide Oxygen Deficiency Ammonia Chlorine The 928 is the first Rosemount-branded gas detector on the market. The Wireless Gas Monitor offers Innovative wireless gas sensing technology from the world leader in WirelessHART. The Wireless Gas Monitor allows our customers to extend the protection of toxic gas monitoring to their most challenging applications. Today, many end-users are forced to rely solely on personal or portable toxic gas monitoring solutions. These devices are not intended to provide continuous coverage of a facility’s assets and they force our customers to send personnel towards a potential hazard without knowledge about the concentration of toxic gas in the area. The 928 offers flexibility. Customers can easily install and adjust the location of wireless gas monitors as required without concern for the limitations of wired infrastructure. The 928 is a universal transmitter that sets the foundation for future toxic and combustible gas monitoring solutions. The 928 will launch with a Hydrogen Sulfide sensor. This is the first sensor in the 628 family of wireless gas monitor sensors. Hydrogen Sulfide is a colorless, flammable, extremely toxic gas. It is one of the most common hazards at remote sites and H2S can accumulate in any area where oil or natural gas is processed, stored, or transported. Hydrogen sulfide may also threaten workers in wastewater treatment, coke ovens, and pulp and paper mills Going forward the 628 line of sensors will continue to grow and soon we will offer a full portfolio of sensors. This eases the burden of maintenance and installation for our customers. It is worth noting that the 928 offers benefits beyond the realm of safety. The 928 can increase the operational efficiency of a customer facility in several ways. First, the 928 provides a new means for an end user to identify a process upset. Thanks to the information provided by the 928, end users can eliminate wasted trips to the field that must be abandoned when gas is detected by portable monitors Additionally customers may view the Wireless Gas Monitor as an Asset Protection tool, protecting their equipment from corrosion associated with toxic gas The first Rosemount-branded gas detector on the market Extend the protection of toxic gas monitoring to the most challenging applications Universal transmitter sets the foundation for future toxic and combustible gas monitoring solutions

New-to-Market Capabilities
Hot-swappable high performance sensor and power modules Multiple outputs clearly communicate the presence and concentration of toxic gas wireless gas detection is a brand new and rapidly expanding market. In order to be competitive in this new space, devices must demonstrate reliable wireless performance, adequate battery life, and fast accurate gas sensing capability. The Rosemount 928 has been designed to excel in each of these areas. Some of the major new-to-market capabilities of the 928 include multiple output options. When dealing with toxic gas hazards it is of utmost importance that the end user is made aware of a dangerous concentration of gas As Soon As Possible. The 928 communicates the threat in three different ways. Providing flexible alternatives that the customer may adapt to the unique challenges of their application. One of the challenges that prevents customers from adding fixed gas detection to challenging sites is the burden of frequent maintenance intervals. Since both electrochemical sensors and wireless power modules will require replacement these components are often cited as reasons for foregoing toxic gas monitoring. The 928 allows for easy maintenance and quick, simple replacement of the sensor and power module in the field. The 628 sensor can also be calibrated at a bench and then carried into the field for a sensor swap. This is a dramatic labor savings versus traditional field calibration efforts. Our customers have operations that range from arctic cold to harsh dry desert environments. Our Wireless Gas monitor is certified for operation in hazardous locations ranging from -40 C to +50 C and is certified IP66 – providing toxic gas monitoring where our customer require it, regardless of the environmental challenge. Certified for use in harsh environments

Multiple Outputs Clearly Communicate the Presence and Concentration of Toxic Gas
Local Outputs Clear LCD provides local indication Optional discrete output available to actuate local alarms or indicators WirelessHART® The most reliable and widely-used wireless communication protocol User configurable update rate (1 second to 60 minutes) Emerson has spent over a decade building adoption of the WirelessHART communication protocol. Customers know that they can trust the operations and security of their sites to the best wireless protocol in the world. WirelessHART is the clear leader in reliable Wireless Communication. The 928 benefits from all of the strengths inherent to the WirelessHART standard including system Reliability, Security, and Effective Power Management. WirelessHART also enables the user to benefit from the flexibility of mesh networks and configurable update rates. Backing up the strength of WirelessHART communication is a clear configurable LCD display. The screen has multiple display modes to choose from depending on user requirements. This allows field operators to clearly understand the toxic gas threat in the area. A third output method is provided in the form of an optional discrete output. If this option is selected, a customer can use the 928 to trigger external safety equipment such as beacons, alarms, or annunciators in the event of an alert. This feature has the potential to protect workers from entering areas where dangerous levels of toxic gas could pose an immediate threat to their safety. The 928 can fill a purely supervisory role – sending updates on gas concentration once every hour with the LCD screen disabled to extend power module life. At the opposite end of the extreme a customer may choose to use the device as a safety monitor – providing updates to the host system every 1 or 2 seconds, keeping the LCD display on constantly, and utilizing the discrete output option to trigger local alarms to protect workers.

Hot-swappable, High Performance Sensor and Power Modules
Hot-Swappable Power Module Replaceable intrinsically safe power module 4+ year battery life with 8 second update rate High Performance Monitoring Accuracy: ± 3 ppm or 10 % of reading, whichever is greater T50 < 10 seconds: T90 ~ 45 seconds with IP filter installed The 928 meets the performance requirements that customers have come to expect from their wired toxic gas detectors. Gas detectors are compared with one another based on their ability to accurately and quickly detect the presence of gas. The 928 uses industry-standard sensing technology and even outperforms some conventional detectors. The less time customers need to spend interacting with field devices the better. Minimizing interaction time not only decreases costs for our customers, it improves safety since fewer man man-hours need to be spent in hazardous areas. The 928 is designed to ease maintenance and stocking concerns. The device leverages the standard Emerson black lithium power module. Depending on ambient conditions, network setup, and user-configured update rate – the power module is capable of a 4 year service life. Electrochemical sensors like those used in the 628 toxic sensor module have a finite service life. This life will be altered based on ambient conditions but it typically will last from years in service. The 628 sensor is contained within a replaceable intrinsically safe module that can be removed and installed with one hand and no tools without the need to remove the device from the hazardous area. The 928 will feature a end-of-life diagnostic capability that will communicate to the user that the installed 628 sensor is nearing the end of its useful life helping our customers plan replacement operations efficiently.
