4 Our Project Determine which alloy of aluminum would be best for use in a rocket Why use Aluminum? Stain/Work Hardening Precipitation Hardening Grain Refinement Aluminum because it is strong and light Stain/work hardening:stretching past yeild point then stopping Grain refinement:aligning and reducing size of grains to make smaller. done by heating and cooling at different rates Precipitation hardening (Age Hardening): heating it up to draw out impurities in the solute that impede crystal lattice movement, making it stronger

5 Determining an Alloy for Rocket
Conductivity Hardness It is important to be able to distinguish between alloys after their creation in order to assure the quality of the alloys. The two major traits tested are hardness and conductivity. Hardness is measured by applying a measured load to the surface of the alloy and measuring the displacement created. Conductivity is tested with a current applied to the surface of the alloy. Various alloys can be determined by their own particular conductivity and hardness.
