4. Summary of the Scene: Teddy enters the Polpin Shop
He immediately begins to make advances towards Maggie
Maggie encourages Teddy’s advances “Wait until I lock the door”
The intimacy between Teddy and Maggie increases… Until…
Gert walks in!
Gert is in shock to see her own mother embraced in the arms of the man she (Gert) admires, “Mother!... Was that the reason you sent me with the groceries to Katie?”
Maggie declares that Gert should be thankful for her (Maggie’s) actions, “Any girl with an ounce of sense would thank me. If you had your own way you’d make a complete wreck of your life.”
However, Gert does not see it this way “And is it how you think it’s not wrecked now?”
Gert exists the shop in a rage of anger
Maggie doesn’t want Gert to have the same life she had with her husband “She’ll get over it and she won’t travel the same road I did”.
Maggie’s scheming nature is highlighted in this scene. She believes she has her daughter’s best interests in mind, however, Maggie’s scheming ways lead to her driving her children away.

In Act two scene 1 we see how Maggie creates an obstacle to Gert’s happiness. She devices a scheming plan in order to steer Gert away from the Man she admires, Teddy Heelin, therefore creating an obstacle to Gert finding her own true happiness.
