To asses the client’s problem To explore the client’s thoughts, emotions and defences regarding drug use To help the client get a perspective about his drug use and its consequences in a protected environment

Distinguishing between empathy and sympathy
Listen to and understand the client’s experience from his perspective Always side with the client May not always be in agreement with client Become emotionally involved Help the client find his own solutions Sharing the burden with the client Not making the client’s suffering your burden Reactions of the PE may become similar to other family members
