The Metric System S1
5
The “Metric Ladder” S2 The Metric Ladder is a type of measurement tool used to help with conversions. In a Metric Ladder, the Base Unit is always in the middle.
6
Unit 0.21) Converting Units
7
Zeroes S3 It is very critical to remember the zeroes. How many zeroes there are can affect conversion. An example would be 100, which has two zeroes. If multiplying, move two decimal places to the right, and move two to the left if you are dividing.
8
Where’s the Decimal? S4 It is also critical to remember where the decimal place is in a whole number. You will always find the decimal place in the end of a number; isn’t 1 the same as 1.0?
9
Converting to Bigger Units S5 When converting to bigger units, remove zeroes or move the decimal place to the left. Why? It takes a minimum amount of bigger units to make a smaller one,; for an example, 0.001 gram is 1 kilogram.
10
Converting to Smaller Units S6 When converting to smaller units, add zeroes. Why? It takes more small units to make a bigger one,; for an example, 1 gram is 100 centigrams.
11
Unit 0.22) Base Units
12
Base Unit In the Metric System, the base unit is the basic measurement. It measures at least seven different kinds of measurements. S7
13
Base Unit Measures How Much? S8 In the Metric System, the base unit always measures 1 whole unit.
14
Unit 2.3) Prefixes
15
The Prefix “Deci” Deci in the Metric System means a numerical value of 0.1 (or a tenth). It is between the base unit and the prefix “centi.” S9
16
The Prefix “Centi” centi In the Metric System, the prefix “centi” has a value of 0.01 (or a hundredth). It comes in between deci and milli. S10
17
The Prefix “Milli” S11 Milli In the basic Metric System, “Milli” is the smallest unit, which value is equal to 0.001 (or one thousandths).
18
The Prefix “Deca” S12 Deca The base unit has a value of one. “Deca” on the other hand has a value of ten.
19
The Prefix “Hecta” S13 Hecta In between “Kilo” and “Deca” comes the prefix “Hecta.” This prefix means a value of 100.
20
The Prefix “Kilo” S14 Kilo Usually in the basic Metric System, the “Kilo” is represented as the highest value. The prefix “Kilo” represents a value of 1,000.
