Solar 101 Electricity from the sun?
5
HOW SOLAR WORKS Solar panels capture sunlight or (DC) Direct Current electricity. The Inverter converts that DC energy to AC current to power your house. Energy produced by solar system, but not used in house, goes back to the utility grid (net metering)
6
Net Metering – Utility installs net meter to measure power flow in both directions – Solar power first feeds any devices in the home using power – If there is excess solar power it goes back onto the grid. – Customers are usually not paid for sending power to the grid, but can get credits for future grid use. How a PV System Works

Bill Review Do you have a copy of your bill?
16
Bill Review Objective: Understand what they are paying for The transmission charge is almost half of your bill Going solar = no transmission charge Solar is less expensive because it cost less to produce. Were saving your neighbors on average 20% on there utility bills It’s like buying a Pizza and paying twice as much for delivery.
17
Bill Review With or without bill “Look here on your bill see where it says generation charge? That's what they're charging you for your electricity. And you see here where it says Transmission charge? That refers to what you pay for having the electricity delivered to your house. Included in the transmission charge is the cost associated with keeping the grid in working order” Questions “What do you notice about the Transmission charge?” – “The transmission is almost half of your bill” [this is an example, you will need to look at the bill to determine how large the charge is for a particular customer] “Do you shop at Costco or any other warehouse retailer?” “Why”? – “Exactly, because when you buy in bulk you expect to get a discount. Right? – “Not your utility company, the more you buy the more they charge you for things like improving their infrastructure” – “It’s like ordering a pizza and having the delivery charge be the same as the pizza” – “Going solar costs you less because it costs less to produce. Based on your local utility price and average usage, we can typically save customers a minimum of 15% and at times up to 30% compared to what you’re currently paying to your utility.”
