2. What are CUSE Grants?
“CUSE grants will support a broad range of research areas ranging from basic, translational and applied sciences, engineering, social sciences, liberal arts, visual, fine and performing arts, humanities, to creative research and various other forms of scholarly activities.”

4. Seed Grant Seed Grants characteristics:
Funding is capped at $5,000, per application
They are for a 2 year duration
Applications support individuals or teams
Project Narrative section is 2 pages
Deadline for submission is 5pm, January 31, 2018

5. Innovative and Interdisciplinary Research Grant (I2 Research Grant)
I2 Research Grants characteristics:
Funding is capped at $30,000, per application
They are for a 2 year duration
Applications support both:
Individuals – Innovative, and can be disciplinary in nature
Teams – Interdisciplinary
PI and/or team should proven successes in their field and competitively positioned for continued success.
Project Narrative section is 5 pages
Deadline for submission is 5pm, January 31, 2018

6. Good to Great Grant Good to Great Grant characteristics:
Funding is capped at $30,000, per application
They are for a 2 year duration
Applications support individuals or teams
Must evidence excellent reviews from external funding sources and have the School/College’s ADR support.
Project Narrative section is 5 pages
Deadline for submission is 5pm, January 31, 2018

7. Interdisciplinary Seminar Grant
Interdisciplinary Seminar Grant characteristics:
Funding is capped at $10,000, per application
They are for a 2 year duration
Applications support individuals or teams
Designed to cover the costs of seminar series (e.g.- refreshments, space rental, invited speakers).
Not for research activity or for departmental seminars
Project Narrative section is 2 pages
Deadline for submission is 5pm, January 31, 2018

8. Proposal Formatting Margin - 1 inch: top, bottom, left, and right
Minimum font size - 12 points
Single-spaced, single-sided 8.5 x 11 inch pages
Pages should be numbered
Please Note: Compliance with the proposal formatting guidelines is important!
“Applications that do not meet the guidelines as stated in the RFP will be eliminated from the competition and will be returned to the applicant without review.”

10. Project Summary Limited to 250 words
This is the same requirement for all four Cuse grant programs

11. Project Narrative
Make sure formatting requirements are set correctly and observe the page limitation for the specific Cuse grant program you are applying.
Each Project Narrative should include the following sections:
Introduction
Rationale, Significance, and Broader Impact
Approach
For Good to Great Only:
Plans to address extramural review panel
Assessment statement from the ADR
Note: Avoid excessive jargon in proposal narratives, as reviewers may not be experts in your specific area.

12. Leverage of CUSE funding
Since the program is new, and there haven’t been previous CUSE grants projects, use this section to prospectively discuss how you will leverage CUSE funding to further pursue extramural grant funding sources.
List what funding agencies you plan to apply for and what programs

13. References Cited This section lists all work cited in the text.
References must be complete, including titles and all co-authors in a professional journal format
List alphabetically, using last name of the first author, or list by number in the order of citation.

14. Facilities and Equipment
List all equipment, resources and facilities that your team has at it’s availability to perform the project.
For Interdisciplinary projects, ensure that the additional resources leveraged by the collaboration are noted.
If facilities and equipment beyond what are currently available are necessary to complete the project, this should be stated and addressed.

15. Functions of Key Personnel
Use this section to clearly describe the roles of the PI and Co-Investigators on the project.

16. Budget – Allowable Costs
Utilize the provided Cuse Grant Budget Template
Funds can be requested for:
Salaries and Wages for postdocs and students
Salaries and Wages for PIs and Co-I’s limited to one month
Fringes
Materials and Supplies
Travel directly related to the project
Equipment – total is limited to $5,000 I2 and G2G
Publication Costs
Project specific computers and/or project specific software (i.e.- predominate use on a Cuse grant project)

17. Budget – Unallowable Costs
The following items are unallowable for expenditure on a Cuse grant:
Subcontracts to external institutions
Office Supplies
Cell Phones
Internet service
Memberships/subscriptions
iPads
Computer peripherals
Indirect costs

18. Budget Justification
This section is where you provide narrative justification to the items requested in your Project Budget
This is your opportunity to thoroughly explain what budget allocations are needed and why they are important to complete the goals and objectives of your project
No Page Limitation, but typically accomplished in pages

19. Curriculum Vitae
Provide biographical information for all investigators
Present your academic and research credentials
Do not list meetings attended, seminars given or personal information
Limited to 2 pages (excluding publications list)
Publications List:
If your academic discipline does not publish in refereed journals, then substitute books, book chapters, or other academic/ artistic outputs consistent with your discipline

20. Current and Pending Support
Utilize the form provided on the Cuse Grants web page to provide a listing of all proposals that are Pending, Awarded, or Planned for Submission.
The Form is required for the PI of the CUSE Grant

21. Conflict of Interest Form
Utilize the form provided on the CUSE grants web page for convenience
PI and all Co-investigators must complete
The form is intended to minimize potential conflicts of interest in the review process
Include the following:
Co-authors on publications within the last 3 years, include pending submissions
All collaborators on projects within the last 3 years, include current and planned
All thesis or doctoral advisees/advisors

22. Review Process 1st Stage Screening
1st level screening will consist of checking margins, page limits, font sizes, line spacing, and inclusion of required sections etc.
Program specific items will be checked (e.g. external reviews for G2G)
Compliant proposals will then be prepared for distribution to review panels
Non-compliant proposals will be returned to applicants without review

23. Merit Review Process
Reviewers from a variety of disciplines from across the University will be engaged.
Evaluation Criteria:
Overall Merit (25%)
Qualifications of Personnel (25%)
Project Relevance (25%)
Efforts and Success for extramural funding (25%)
Reviewers will sort proposals into categories:
Must fund
High priority for funding
Medium priority for funding
Lower medium priority for funding
Low Priority for funding
Do Not fund
Funding decisions based on evaluation rankings and availability of funds
