By the end of the lesson we will be able to:
collect raw data
use tallying as means of counting
organize raw data in a frequency table
make sense of data in a frequency table

4. What’s your favourite colour?
Go round the room and list everyone’s favourite colour:
blue, green, pink, red, red…..
When you have them all sit back down in your place
Look at the list, you have just collected raw data..
It is raw, because it is not organized
In Maths we like our things organized, so we will be looking at ways to organize it
Let’s write down the list on the whiteboard…

6. Would you prefer counting or tallying? What if you use tallying?
Why is a Tally useful?
Imagine having a book with a thousand pages and you want to count how many times a certain word is used.
Would you prefer counting or tallying?
Let’s say you decide to count and someone walks in your room to ask a question, you’re on page 100 already but you lose count – so you have to go back to page 1!!
AAAAAAAAAAA!
What if you use tallying?
If you use tallying you cross off a word and make a tally mark, cross off the next and make a tally mark…
If someone comes to disturb you, you can have a whole conversation and pick up right where you left off when it’s done (last crossed off word) and know how many you have counted so far (tally marks)
So, a tally column is useful when you have lots of data – it is an assurance of correct counting!!

7. Steps to Draw a Frequency Table..
Draw a two (three if including tally) columned table
Title the first column according to the data category, the second Tally and the third Frequency
Fill in the data category
Cross off the raw data and draw the tally marks
Count the tally marks to compute the frequency
Write the total of the frequency column
