A form of government in which the leader is not a king or queen but someone put in office by citizens with the right to vote. In a republic, the citizens have the power. Legion – A group of Roman soldiers numbering around 6000 men.

Government & Society Why did the patricians fear that the plebeians would rise up to overthrow them? The plebeians did not have any power and could not hold elected office. What did the patricians do to address the plebeians concerns? They created new offices that could only be held by plebeians. These offices protected the rights of plebeians.

Consuls – There were two and they served for two-year terms. How did the Romans feel about their participation in government? They felt it was their civic duty to serve and help Rome prosper.
