POULTRY FOR POVERTY REDUCTION
First Year in the cage then to a full farm. It only takes 45 Minutes of your time everyday to clean and feed the chicken. You can actually do other things after. You pick not less than 15 fertilized eggs from 35 hens on a daily basis and eggs in 6 months. You are able to hatch not less than 600 chicks in the first 6 months of laying. Even if you don’t have land you can begin as the cage is portable and can be positioned anywhere you live. The Kuroiler Breed matures faster, serves both as egg and meat production, resistant to diseases and has a life span of 3 years. From 35 hens I now have 100 hens and 13 cocks.

How it works Groups of 10 people each are formed from low earners and unemployed community people especially the youths and women. Groups are trained for one week in practical poultry keeping and management with a focus at Kuroiler Breed. Memorandum of understandings signed between the groups and project management. Each group is given a startup kit of 5 cages and each one of the cages is equipped with one-months old 35 Kuroiler hens and 4 Kuroiler cocks. After one year, groups return the cages with each equipped with one month-old Kuroiler hens and 4 Kuroiler cocks. Groups now combine the saved resources and shift their projects to bigger spaces for expansion. Again the returned cages are given to other created groups following the same conditions. Groups keep on bringing fertilized eggs for hatching into new chicks for both keeping and selling.

The Problem Unemployment and lower income are the greatest challenges faced by mostly the youths, women and school dropouts in rural communities here in Uganda. With Uganda’s population at 34.4 Million people (National population census 2014 provisional results report) at least 40% are reported to be living in absolute poverty and many being the rural poor who have remained outside the monetary economy changes. Over 75% of Ugandan earn their living from Agriculture but majority of the youths and women have no access to land thus it is had for them to effectively and profitably engage in agriculture. Again, access to bodybuilding foods in rural communities here in Uganda is hard as most of the rural households are poor to afford most of protein-rich foods such as fish, beef, eggs, milk, etc

The Solutions Our innovation implementation plan is designed to empower Youths and Women with practical entrepreneur skills in profitable Kuroiler poultry farming to enable beneficiaries raise funds for overcoming their financial challenges. The cage concept allows those who don’t have access to land like youths, and women to have an opportunity to engage in income generating micro- economic agri-business ventures within their homes. This business idea encourages team work and working in group to maximize resources, knowledge and skills while developing. With this business idea, beneficiaries begin small as they gain practical skills in effective poultry enterprise management before going full scale. Within the design of this business idea, beneficiaries are able to consume some of the eggs (especially the damaged ones). This help them to have ready access to protein-rich food for the benefit of their health.

Business Model The business will make money through:
Selling of one-day; one-week; and one-month old kuroiler chicks. Selling fertilized eggs Selling off extra cocks Selling off layer kuroiler chicken. Selling manure to local farmers. The marketing will be done locally and from our tangible experience, the kuroiler chicken are readily consumed by schools, supermarkets, food stores, and individuals. We shall advertise our business by mouth-to-mouth; flyers, radio, social media, news paper, and through community organized workshops.

Budget Currently I spend money on: Poultry feeds of 100 hens and 13 cocks, Hatching, water, and some basic poultry vitamins. My current total Expenditure every month is $150. I pick on average 50 fertilized eggs every day from 100 hens. In 10 days I pick on average 500 fertilized eggs and in a month I do pick (500 eggs X 3) = fertilized eggs. Every month I hatch 1300 fertilized eggs into not less than 900 one-day old kuroiler chicks. I sell each chick at a minimum 2500/= ($0.76). With 900 one-day old chicks I generate $0.76 X 900 = $684. After subtracting off all the expenses which total to $200 then I remain with $484 as profit every month. I request for $10,000. This will help me to: (1) Increase my parent stock from 100 hens to 500 hens and 55 cocks. (2) Buy a fuel powered grain milling machine for mixing poultry feeds; (3) Stock enough feeds when prices are lower (4) Construct a bigger poultry house (5) Marketing and Promotion of my poultry products and services. (6) Create more groups of farmers to be introduced to Caged Poultry keeping as a business.
