1 Room 23 February 13-17, 2017 Review Week
This week in language arts we reviewed the skills we having been practicing. We reviewed our comprehension strategies and practiced writing the beginning, middle, and end, and the problem and solution of stories. We also practiced the long /o/ and long /a/ vowel teams, as well as magic e. Please review and practice these skills at home as spelling is becoming harder for a lot of the students. Art Goes to School! During Art Goes to School, we viewed many different paintings and played I-Spy. Students learned about realistic, surrealistic, and abstract paintings. Valentine’s Day Party On Tuesday, students celebrated Valentine’s Day by passing out valentines, playing games, listening to a story, and by making a Valentine’s Day picture frame. We had so much fun! Thank you to the parents that came in to help! Important Dates: February 20: No School February 24: Scholastic Orders due Optional volcanoes do (by morning) Parent HW due March 1: White button down shirts due (for Kimonos) March 1–3: Half days for parent-teacher conferences Reminders Weekly reports to be signed and returned Tuesday. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! 2 Alternates for the week:
Social Studies All week, we reviewed how to count in Japanese. See if your child still remembers! We started learning more about volcanoes in preparation for our eruptions next Friday! Students learned about the 3 layers of earth and how volcanoes erupt. Science Our frog eggs arrived on Thursday! If you haven’t heard from your child by now, room 23 is going to hatch their very own Leopard Frogs (green frogs). They are currently in the egg stage and should start to hatch into tadpoles in the next couple of days. Ask your child for more information on this exciting process and to give you more information about our special frogs! Math This week we wrapped up chapter 10 and started chapter 11: Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs. In this chapter, students will learn how data is presented in the form of picture graphs, tally charts, and bar graphs. Students will also be able to interpret and make sense of the data from the diagrams. We will practice how to collect and organize our own data, as well.
