Writing Evening

2 Food for thought… When was the last time you chatted to your child at length? Do you always give time to discuss books with your child? When was the last time you wrote something that was not a text, or social media post? Does your child see you write? Do you write with your child? How do you respond when your child writes something?

7 Writing in Lower Key Stage 2
Emphasis on ‘style’ of writing and audience awareness Exploration of genres and writing for purpose Conjunctions, prepositions, clause structure Progressive form of verbs e.g. she was shouting Paragraphing Larger variety of punctuation e.g. speech marks No more phonetic spelling!

8 Impact on writing ability
Speech: improper pronunciations, baby talk, incorrect use of tense Reading: struggle with reading then you struggle with writing! Access to vocabulary, spellings and grammar. Access to a variety of text; children come unstuck in LKS2 when they don’t access different types of texts.

Writing for purpose: lists, labels, thank you cards, invitations, write letters, diary Having experiences to talk and write about Word games Constantly correct speech and pronunciations Extend vocabulary and use adventurous words Use letter names AND letter sounds Ask open questions Access to a variety of text across genres
