1 2. What organ(s) do you think filters your blood?
Have you ever seen a water-purification system attached to a faucet? This system removes impurities from the water such as arsenic or other chemicals that can be harmful to people. As water passes through the filters contained in the system, the impurities are trapped on the surface of the filters. Eventually, the water that comes out of this purifier is free of the impurities. 1.Your body has its own system for filtering blood. Why might the blood in your body need to be filtered? 2. What organ(s) do you think filters your blood? 3. How do you think the filtered materials leave your body?

2 Excretion

3 Excretion process of discharging waste matter from the blood, tissues, or organs

4 Excretion Process of discharging waste matter from the blood, tissues, or organs Helps to remove heat from the body by keeping it a constant temperature - homeostasis

5 Metabolic Wastes CO2 H20 mineral salts nitrogenous wastes
Ammonia very toxic fish Urea moderate humans Uric Acid low birds, reptiles

6 Waste Production in Humans
Formed During CO2 Cellular respiration

7 Waste Production in Humans
Formed During CO2 Cellular respiration H20

8 Waste Production in Humans
Formed During CO2 Cellular respiration H20 Dehydration synthesis Nitrogenous compounds Urea Breakdown of Amino Acids

9 Waste Production in Humans
Formed During CO2 Cellular respiration H20 Nitrogenous compounds Urea Breakdown of Amino Acids Mineral Salts Build up during metabolism

10 Major Understanding Elimination vs. Excretion
Removal of undigested materials which have not entered cells Large Intestine Excretion Removal of cellular wastes

11 Excretory Organs Lungs Skin Liver Kidneys

12 The Urinary System Artery Vein Kidney (Cross Section) Kidney Cortex
Medulla Ureter Urinary bladder Urethra

13 Lungs paired organs in the chest cavity that exchange gases oxygen and carbon dioxide

14 Lungs Function remove CO2 and water vapor Waste Removed CO2, H20
paired organs in the chest cavity that exchange gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide exhaling rids the body of excess water and heat Function remove CO2 and water vapor Waste Removed CO2, H20

15 Skin serves to cool (remove heat) and warm (shivering);
gets rid of waste products like salts and minerals that are in the sweat.

16 Skin Function regulates body temp by opening capillaries Waste Removed
serves to cool (remove heat) and warm (shivering); also gets rid of waste products like salts and minerals that are in the sweat. Function regulates body temp by opening capillaries perspiring Waste Removed heat, perspiration ( water, urea, salts)

17 Liver main organ for cleansing the blood;
breakdown large proteins and filters them from the blood

18 Liver main organ for cleansing the blood;
breakdown large proteins and filters them from the blood Function detoxifies blood, breakdown Amino Acids, converts ammonia to urea, forms bile, breakdown old RBC’s Waste Removed Urea removed by Kidneys parts of RBC

19 Kidney remove toxins from blood; produce urine which is salts, nitrogenous wastes and water we have two, located in the pit of the back, but can live with one (or none) as long as we are treated medically.

20 Kidney Function Wastes Produced Filter blood
Regulates concentration of substances in body fluids Wastes Produced Urine water mineral salts

21 Other Excretory Organs
Ureter thin tube leading from the kidney to the urinary bladder urinary bladder very stretchy bag-like organ that stores urine prior to release (urination) Urethra tube leading from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body

22 The Kidney Cortex – filters blood Medulla – reabsorption

23 Major Function of Kidneys
Filtration Filters out both good and bad(wastes) Re-absorption useful (good) substances are reabsorbed

24 Blood in tubing flows through dialysis fluid
 Kidney Dialysis Section 38-3 Blood in tubing flows through dialysis fluid Blood pump Vein Artery Shunt Used dialysis fluid Air detector Dialysis machine Fresh dialysis fluid Compressed air

25 Excretory Disorders Kidney Failure Kidney Stones Cirrhosis
