Essential Question: Why did Henry VIII leave the Catholic Church?

2 Henry Seeks Annulment Henry = against protestants
Wrote a pamphlet denouncing Luther  given the title “Defender of the Faith” by the Pope 1527 Henry  married to Catherine of Aragon Henry and Catherine had Mary Tudor Henry fell in love with Anne Boleyn  wanted to divorce Catherine – Catholic Church did NOT allow divorce  asked the pope to annul (cancel)  Pope refused (did not want to make Charles V made, he was Catherine’s nephew)

4 Breaking with the Church
Henry was made and decided to take over the Church of England  took it from the Pope’s control Thomas Cranmer  archbishop  annulled the marriage 1533, Henry married Anne Boleyn  gave birth to Elizabeth

5 1534, Act of Supremacy  made Henry “only supreme head of the Church of England”
Many Catholics refused to accept  executed for treason One of which was Sir Thomas More More was later canonized- recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church

6 Strengthening the Church of England
– Investigated Catholic convents and monasteries Henry ordered them to be closed, seized land and wealth  gave land to high-ranking nobles to get their support in the Anglican Church Henry still rejected most Protestant doctrines Used an English bible but kept most a Catholic forms of worship

7 Religious Turmoil Henry died 1547
Married 6 times – only had one son  9 year old Edward VI (took the throne) New laws to bring Protestant reforms to England Book of Common Prayer-Thomas Cranmer– required reading for each church service Moderate form of Protestantism  protests Edward died in his teens  Mary became queen Mary wanted England to be Catholic again Burned Protestants at the stake

8 The Elizabeth Settlement
Mary died in 1558  Elizabeth became queen Slowly enforced protestant reforms Were a compromise: Preserved Catholic ritual and the hierarchy of bishops and archbishops Did NOT call herself the supreme head of the church Restored the Book of Common Prayer Elizabeth helped to make England a firmly Protestant country
