Presentation on theme: "1. If Cabs baseball is dominant over Falcons baseball: (B & b)"— Presentation transcript:

1 BW HAVE SLATE, MARKER & ERASER ON DESK, & separate sheet of paper Must Work QUICKLY & STAY ON TASK!
1. If Cabs baseball is dominant over Falcons baseball: (B & b) a. Write the genotype for a heterozygous father. b. Write the genotype for a homozygous recessive mother. c. Draw a punnett square to show the possibilities for their offspring. d. What are the genotype frequencies for offspring? (use vocab) e. What are the phenotype frequencies? ***Review your genetics notes when finished

2 BW Answers A. Bb (heterozygous) B. bb (homozygous recessive)
C. (Punnett Square) D. 50% homozygous recessive 50% heterozygous E. 50% Falcons 50% Cabs

3 This week: Wednesday: Punnet square practice, Codominance, Incomplete dominance worksheest Thursday: Review genetics, quiz on VOCAB Friday: Genetic Disease brochure due All genetic worksheets due (binder check) *I will have your notebooks graded over the weekend- sorry it has been a MONTH! 

4 Gregor Mendel (1822- 1884) “FATHER OF GENETICS”
-experiments with pea plants led to understanding of dominant vs recessive -experiments unappreciated during his time, died in 1884 due to kidney failure

5 Do all organisms follow Mendel’s Law Of Dominance?
How does skin color work in humans? What about height?

6 Codominance What does the prefix “co” mean? (hint: Coworkers, Cooperation, Co-captains…)

7 Codominance: In heterozygous genotypes, both of the alleles are expressed TOGETHER in the phenotype. Uses only capital letters RED x WHITE = RED&WHITE

8 What is the genotype for a black cow?
BB What is the genotype for a white cow? WW What is the genotype for a black AND white cow?? BW

9 P= BB X WW (do the Punnett square) F1= 100% BW

10 Blood Types

11 3 Blood Type Rules- write on SIDE of blood type handout
Parent’s Blood Types Parent’s Possible Genotypes Offsprings’ Possible Genotypes Offsprings’ Possible Blood Types Offsprings’ Blood Types NOT Possible A O AA, Ao oo Ao, oo A, O B, AB B BB, Bo AB, Ao, Bo, oo AB, A, B, O none AB Ao, Bo A, B AB, O Bo, oo B, O A, AB AA, AB, Ao, Bo A, B, AB, O AB, BB, Ao, Bo A, B, AB AA, BB, AB AA, Ao, oo BB, Bo, oo

12 Both A and B alleles are dominant over o.
Rule 1 Both A and B alleles are dominant over o.  So, individuals who have an Ao genotype will have an A phenotype.

13 The A and B alleles are codominant.
Therefore, if an A is inherited from one parent and a B from the other, the phenotype will be AB. Rule 2

14 People who are type O have oo genotypes.
Rule: 3 People who are type O have oo genotypes.  In other words, they inherited a recessive o allele from both parents.

15 Practice AA Bo Homozygous recessive AB Type A Type B (o is recessive)
What are the phenotypes of the following genotypes? AA Type A Bo Type B (o is recessive) Homozygous recessive Type O AB Type AB (codominant)

16 Example: Ao Mom and a Bo Dad
Punnett Square You perform blood crosses just the same way as you would any other Punnet Square. Example: Ao Mom and a Bo Dad Show by vote of fingers, how many offspring genotypes are possible? 4 = (Ao, Bo, AB, oo)

17 They did a Punnett Square for all potential crosses:
blood type worksheet Parent’s Blood Types Parent’s Possible Genotypes Offsprings’ Possible Genotypes Offsprings’ Possible Blood Types Offsprings’ Blood Types NOT Possible A O AA, Ao oo Ao, oo A, O B, AB B BB, Bo AB, Ao, Bo, oo AB, A, B, O none AB Ao, Bo A, B AB, O Bo, oo B, O A, AB AA, AB, Ao, Bo A, B, AB, O AB, BB, Ao, Bo A, B, AB AA, BB, AB AA, Ao, oo BB, Bo, oo ? ? ? ? ? They did a Punnett Square for all potential crosses: AA x oo AND Ao x oo Do Punnets on board for students to see

18 Show your work (in notebook) for all potential crosses:

19 Continue the blood type practice problems (do punnets in notebook)

20 Answer Key A O AA, Ao oo Ao, oo A, O B, AB B BB, Bo AB, Ao, Bo, oo

21 Incomplete Dominance What do you think “incomplete” dominance looks like?

22 Red flower x white flower
Incomplete dominance In the heterozygous genotype, the alleles are BLENDED in the phenotype Uses only capital letters Red flower x white flower = Pink flower

23 Do a Punnett Square cross between 2 green flowers
Slate practice… BB = blue YY = yellow BY = green Do a Punnett Square cross between 2 green flowers What would be the genotype of GREEN flowers? (green is a color that is “inbetween” yellow and blue)

24 Practice with the spongebob worksheet.
Incomplete dominance Practice with the spongebob worksheet. Both handouts due Friday. Turn in early for extra credit.

25 Heterochromia iridis In genetics, a mosaic or mosaicism denotes the presence of two or more populations of cells with different genotypes in one individual who has developed from a single fertilized egg chimerism, where two or more genotypes arise from the fusion of more than one fertilized zygote in the early stages of embryonic development.

26 Closure Do a Venn Diagram with the similarities and differences between codominance & incomplete dominance

27 RadioLab (5:26-14:00)

28 Vocab Quiz A. Genotype with 2 different alleles (Bb) B. The allele that is ALWAYS expressed in the phenotype, even if only one is present C. The alleles that a person has, their genetic makeup D. The allele that is ONLY expressed in the phenotype if both are the same E. A pair of chromosomes that has genes for the same TRAITS, but may have different alleles F. A chart that predicts allele combinations G. The physical appearance of an organism H. A genotype with two of the same alleles (BB or bb) I. The study of heredity (inheritance) J. A version of a gene 1. Allele 2. Genotype 3. Heterozygous 4. Homologous Chromosomes 5. Phenotype 6. Recessive 7. Dominant 8. Punnett Square 9. Homozygous 10. Genetics
