- Learning and Caring Together - Issue 17 Friday 26th January 2018 Beyond the War Memorial Year 6 had a wonderful day working with visiting artist, Angie Thompson, yesterday. They produced some brilliant art work based around symbols of World War 1 which will be used to help commemorate the end of the ‘Great War’ later this year. All work was taken away by Angie so it can be collated and digitised before examples are sent to the last known addresses of those who fell in the War. A fantastic opportunity for our Year 6 pupils to be a part of. Good Luck A huge good luck to the children taking part in the gymnastics competition at Stanley High next week. This is our first sporting engagement of the New Year and we look forward to letting you know how they did. Also, it’s goodbye and good luck to our six students from Edge Hill who leave us today. They have been fantastic additions to Year 1, 3 and 5 and have given lots to the life of St. John’s whilst they’ve been here! Admissions We have been asked by Sefton admissions to double check parents of children due to start Reception in September 2018 have all applied for their place as there a lot of late requests going in! Please ensure you apply for a place even if you already have a sibling attending school. Play and Learn Sessions Our hugely popular Play and Learn sessions for pre-school children are returning again after half term. This time, sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 1:45 until 2:45 pm. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity for pre-school children to sample a little taste of school and potentially meet some of their future classmates. Pass the word to ALL who may be interested. Online Safety Meeting Teaching our children to stay safe online is a big priority for us at St, John’s. The best way for your child to remain safe on the internet is for you to be aware of the dangers so that you can recognise the signals, and work with your child to use technology safely and positively. We are holding an online safety meeting for parents on Thursday 8th February at There will be a chance for you to ask any questions while enjoying a cuppa and all those who attend will be entered into a prize draw to win a £25 gift voucher. PFA Following on from our Concert of Colour last week where we raised £200, a big thank you to our PFA who have donated a further £200 towards our new reading books. Compassion Day Thank you to the wonderful Southport and Area Youth Workers Trust for spending the day with us to help us understand the importance of compassion. The children have been busy ‘patting each other on the back’ with hand of compassion to tell each other how wonderful they are. They have introduced to us ‘The 40 Acts of Challenge Cards’ which are 40 ideas to show compassion, kindness, generosity and love in school during the season of Lent. The challenges are simple, yet effective, and intend to run from 14th February to 29th March You can find this challenge by visiting: 40acts.sawtrust.com. Please let us know if your child completes any of these challenges.
