What is a constellation?
A constellation is a group of stars that when viewed from Earth form a picture. When the same stars are viewed from another planet they do not make the same pictures.

Ursa major Aka: Big Bear Discovered in 2nd century
3rd largest constellation in the sky Better known for part of the constellation known as The Big Dipper

Ursa minor Aka: Little Bear Contains Polaris (the Northern Star)
Polaris is a yellow-white super giant star

draco Draco the Dragon Contains stars, galaxies and nebulas.
JK Rowling named Draco Malfoy after this constellation in the Harry Potter series.

cassiopeia Recognizable by M shape (during fall & winter)
W during summer & spring Named after the vain queen (always looking at herself in the mirror).

Big dipper The Big Dipper is part of the larger constellation Ursa Major. Part of a constellation is called an Asterism.

Circumpolar constellations
A few constellations are always visible in the Northern sky. These constellations rotate around our North Star - Polaris.

Polaris is in the middle. Depending on the time of year, constellations like the Little Dipper will look differently in the sky. * Draw the picture.
